Rules for the Texas Hold'em No-Limit Heads-Up Tournament
- The tournament is run as a one-on-one, single elimination competition (ie. just like a tennis tournament). The player defeating his/her opponent moves on to the next round, and so on until the final round has been played and a winner has emerged.
- The game played is Texas Hold'em, no-limit, with the small blind from the dealer and the big blind from the non-dealer, dealer being the first to speak after the deal, and non-dealer the first to speak during the remaining betting rounds. The two players alternate as dealers, high card at the beginning of the round deciding the first dealer. In each hand the dealer shuffles and the non-dealer cuts, several times if the non-dealer so wishes.
- Each player will start the tournament with 2000 units in chips.
- Before the start of the tournament, there will be a random drawing to decide which players meet each other in the first round. Thus, 1-A and 1-B will play each other, 2-A and 2-B will play each other, and so on.
- A winner will meet the "adjoining" winner in the hierarchy created by the initial random drawing; thus, the winner at table 1 meets the winner at table 2, and so on. Exception: see below.
- Each round except the final round lasts 60 minutes. If a player within that time is eliminated in any round, he/she is out of the tournament and the other player advances to the next round. In any individual match still going on at the end of 60 minutes, the last hand is played out and the player with the most chips then advances to the next round.
- The player advancing to the next round does so with the number of chips he/she has at that moment: including the number of chips the advancing player has managed to win from the opponent/-s so far.
- If at the end of any round the two players facing each other have exactly the same number of chips, they will randomly draw one card each from the shuffled pack and the player drawing the highest card (according to bridge ranking order by value and suit) advances to the next round.
- If before the first round there is an uneven number of entries, the random drawing will decide which player gets a bye.
- If before any following round there is an uneven number of players left, the player with the fewest chips at that moment receives the bye for that round. Note that a player can only receive a bye once during the tournament; if the player with the lowest chip count has already had a bye, the player with the second lowest chip count instead receives the bye.
- There will be three 60-minute rounds during the first day of the tournament. The first round will consist of three 20-minute time periods with blinds of 5-10, 10-20 and 20-40 respectively. The second round will consist of two 30-minute time periods with blinds of 30-60 and 50-100 respectively. And the third round will consist of two 30-minute time periods with blinds of 100-200 and 200-400 respectively.
- During the second day of the tournament, the blinds will be 300-600 and 500-1000 respectively in the day's first round, 1000-2000 and 2000-4000 respectively in the next round, with the time periods being 30 minutes each - and so on. "Colouring up" to get rid of lower-denomination chips will be done at appropriate times during the tournament.
- If in the penultimate round there are six players, they will play each other according to this: 1 vs 6, 2 vs 5 and 3 vs 4, with the number referring to the chip count at that time (1 = most chips, 6 = fewest chips). After the penultimate round, the two winners with the most chips will advance to the final, with the Bronze medal going to the third winner.
- If in the penultimate round there are four players, they will play each other according to this: 1 vs 4, and 2 vs 3, with the two winners meeting each other in the final and the Bronze medal going to the non-winning player of the four who has the most chips remaining at the end of the round. If both non-winning players have been eliminated, the Bronze medal goes to that player who outlasted the other during the penultimate round.
- If in the penultimate round there are five players, the player with the lowest chip count is eliminated from the tournament and the four remaining will play each other as per (14) above.
- The final round will not be played to a time limit; instead the blinds will continue to go up from the preceding round but now every 20 minutes, until the winner has taken all the chips from the other player.
- The winner of the final round receives the Gold medal, with his/her opponent receiving the Silver medal.
