EARLY BIRD CATCHES FIRST PLACE

The South African Open was held in Johannesburg on the 17th and 18th February 2001. Format was 16 games, 13 Swiss-paired and 3 King-of-the Hill. Dylan Early won fairly comfortably with 14/16 +1226. Debbe Hossy won 12 games to capture second place while Trevor Hovelmeier and Steven Gruzd took third and fourth after a bloody 3 game King-Of-The-Hill ending.

In earlier play Trevor Hovelmeier's last rack against Urwin Savage-Reid was an outstanding DJKMQWX despite his desperate attempts to balance it up before then. Needless to say he lost that game.

A great competition in all and wonderful to have 2 visiting Zambians take part. Paul Kalumba and Kelvin Sizakawe were given a provisional rating of 1500 for the tournament. Kelvin threatened the top of the leader board after day one, going 6-2. He then lost 5 in a row and only won 2 on day 2. Read their personal account of the event here.

Beaming runner-up Debbe Hossy Arlene Fine, joint high word winner,
with her son Steven Gruzd, high game winner

There was also a recreational division with 8 players, won by Val Hutchinson.
