DICTIONARY WARS PART 5:
Move to Combined Dictionary
As previously reported, the Association of British Scrabble Players (ABSP) Committee duly submitted their plan for a graduated move over to the Combined Dictionary by January 2002 to their AGM - held Saturday 26 August. After much discussion the motion, called The Way Forward, was adopted with 154 votes in favour, 37 against, and 6 abstentions. That represents a 78% vote in favour of the motion.
The ABSP represents the UK's 1000 or so tournament players. The total number of players in UK Clubs is around 5000 and the clubs will be making their own decisions on this issue over the coming months.
So the UK Scrabble tournament players will be playing to the Combined Dictionary by January 2002, this will leave the USA and Canada and Israel as the only Scrabble playing nations playing to a single dictionary - the Official Tournament and Club Word List.
