On the second day of the 1999 Malaysian Nationals, Pui was virtually out of contention, but came back to win on the third day after a fortuitous escape from certain defeat against Tengku Asri, consecutive wins against Ganesh, followed by a come-from-behind victory over Jocelyn Lor in the decider.
