Monopoly

The 2000 World Championships will be held in Toronto, Canada. The competitors will be the 1999 national champions from countries around the world.

The US representative will be 20-year-old Matt Gissel. Gissel, a student from Vermont, won the US Championships held in Las Vegas on 19 October. In a two-hour-long final game held at the MGM Grand Hotel, he defeated the state champions of Maryland, Rhode Island and Alaska. The railroads apparently proved to be the key, as Gissel held all four and the other players landed on these properties several times.

The finals marked the end of a process which started with local qualifying tournaments, and continued with preliminary and final rounds featuring the 49 state champions. The state champions ranged in age from 11 to 60, showing that the game continues to appeal to all ages.
