Blow to Project GIPF
The GIPF project of games inventor Kris Burm, which currently includes the games GIPF, TAMSK and ZÈRTZ, has lost the cooperation of games publishers Schmidt Spiele. For the time being ZÈRTZ will remain on Schmidt's program for next year; they will not go on carrying GIPF and TAMSK.
Burm has said he is determined to see the project through, and promises that Game 4 will be published, though he has no clear plans yet on how. At least a limited edition of the game will exist before the end of 2001, Burm says.
Friends of the GIPF project and abstract games in general can find more news about GIPF and Burm's upcoming multi-event festival "The Other Game" at the GIPF site.

The First GIPF Email Knockout Tournament
February 2000 saw the start of the first GIPF Email Knockout Tournament. The players compete in 3-game matches and only the winners go through.
Three of the four semi-final players are already known. Newcomer Alan Baljeu from Canada won surprisingly with 2-1 against the experienced Belgian Andre Delaet. Rita Pauwels (Belgium) won against Roland Johansson from Sweden. Kurt Vandenbranden (Belgium) won against England's hope Stephen Tavener.
The fourth semi-finalist will be the winner of the match involving Gianni Cottogni (Italy) versus World Champion Werner Dupont. The World Champion has had a hard time and is on the brink of losing one of his three games.
