Report after 4 rounds:
Yu Ying HUANG has won four straight games and leads the 2000 Toronto Open outright. In Round Three, she won a battle of Mindzine analysts (a first for the MSO?), when Phuc NGUYEN sacrificed wrongly in a winning position. "Lucky!" said HUANG after the game.
NGUYEN completed a lousy Sunday by nearly losing to the veteran, Z. LI. He drew, but has almost no chance of retaining the title he has held for three years. HUANG is now a strong favorite to win the tournament, and with it the right to contest the Canadian championship in July.
The tournament started on April 2, 2000. This year, it is co-organized by the Toronto Xiangqi Association and the Scarborough Seniors Chess Club. We have added two prizes, one for Seniors (>= 60) and 1 for youth (<= 15). The seniors are playing extremely well.
Unfortunately, some of the top Toronto players, Peter Sung, Steve Wong and LiangCheng LU, could not join for personal reasons. On the other hand, we have a record high of 52 players registered. So far, we have40+ participants each round.
