Katsumasa Egoshi - World Champion
Katsumasa Egoshi from Brazil beat Thailand's Chioki Ito in the
exciting final game of the Amateur World Championship. Both players are strong
5-dan amateurs and were among the tournament favourites.
In the consolation final Arend van Oosten 4-dan, the European
Champion beat the Dutch Champion Marc Theeuwen 4-dan to take the 3rd place.
Egoshi, 28, was already in his teens a participant of the first Amateur Ryu-O,
advancing to the best 16. Ito, 29, was the High School Champion of Tokyo.
Of the 55 players from around the world 36 competed in 9 sections of 4-player
classifier tournaments.
The two best advanced to the championship class and the 3rd and 4th joined classes
B and C. There were 19 invited players in the championship class.

263 shogi players from 20 countries and associations participated in the
qualifying tournaments of the Shogi World Championship. Except Brazil,
most of the regular shogi players outside Japan participated in the
tournament. In case of Brazil 20 top players participated in the
qualifying match out of total about 700 members.

tea with a big smile of winning or crying with full of tears losing a game because of
Nifu.
