The attempts of the new Taiwanese pro go association - or Taiwan Chi Yuan Culture Foundation to give it its full name - to nurture new talent appears to be paying off already. In the first test for inseis to gain promotion in November 2000, among the four successful were a 12-year-old boy and a 13-year-old. The youngest, and thus the youngest ever Taiwanese pro, is Xiao Zhenghao. The others were Li Kuihan (13), Chen Yida (17) and Lin Zhihan (20).
The Taiwan Chiyuan system is a novel one. The inseis play in a Saturday league, and the top players each month earn a teaching game with a pro. Tests for qualification as pro take place twice a year.
