Flaming June saw the birth of the go player most players would love to emulate. On Bunsei 12-5-5 - that's 1829-06-06 to us hairy barbarians - Honinbo Shusaku popped into the world. Mind you, if you believe the story in Hikaru no Go, the comic series that has taken Japan by storm, it was not really Shusaku who played all those wonderful games, but the Heian aristocrat Fujiwara no Sai. Sai was cheated out of victory by a Heian equivalent of an IGS escaper and so lost the game that decided who occupied the only post of go tutor at Court. His ghost could not rest without vengeance, and it inhabited Shusaku and then little Hikaru. Maybe one day it will vist you- hooooooo....
The other biggies in June have a bit more substance: Cho Chikun and Honinbo Shusai to name but two. Shusai's soul-mate Kawabata Yasunari was another June baby (14 June).
