MOK UPSETS YI FOR THE TITLE

Mok Chin-seok 5-dan won the 19th KBS Cup for the King of Go (Baduk Wang) title on 20 December 2000 by defeating Yi Ch'ang-ho 9-dan.

It was one of the biggest upsets of the year given that Yi is currently enjoying a win-loss ratio of over 85%. But Mok didn't do it just once. He scored two victories to one defeat. It may be that the lightning format evens up the odds.

Older News From 16 November 2000:
YI AND MOK TO FIGHT FOR TITLE

The 19th KBS Cup, for the King of Go (Baduk Wang) title, is coming close to the coronation. The contenders began back in February 2000 under a new format, not as exciting as trial by fire but the tried and tested repechange format. Is it too cynical to wonder whether the older players voted for this, being tired of being outsmarted by the teenyboppers? There is no guarantee they will prevail, but at least they do get a second chance.

The winners' knockout section has been won by Yi Ch'ang-ho 9-dan on 6 September. The loser's knockout section, populated by those who lose in the winners' section, was won by Mok Chin-seok 5-dan on 11 October. Yi and Mok now play off on 25 November.

HOW DOES THE KBS KING OF GO TOURNAMENT WORK?

Also known in the West as the Paduk Wang (meaning King of Go) or King of Paduk or Baduk King, but always referred to in Korean by the name of its sponsors, the Korean Broadcasting Service (KBS).

It is a televised quickplay event. The total prize fund in 1996 was 96m won (winner 11m won; 2nd 4m won) but this was reduced in 1999 to 89,450,000 won total, though first prize remained 11 million won. The winner and runner-up also qualify to play in the international TV Asia Championship.

The main tournament is a 32-man knockout culminating in a three-game final which was originally broadcast in August and September, but this has now been brought forward to March-April.

Komi was still 5.5 points in the 1999 final. Time limits are 5 minutes each, with overtime.
