How would you compare Shogi and Chess?
Shogi has few strong pieces, but as players can make use of the pieces they take, the battle becomes fierce. The most remarkable difference, I feel, is that in the endgame Shogi is more of a speed race, while the Chess ending is a "positional race".
What do you think about GM Lautier's Chess and Shogi promotion trip to Japan?
Mr Lautier, apart from being a Chess player, understands Shogi very well too. I also tried to promote his visit to Japanese shogi fans. I also add that, I was surprised to know that he, who ought to have been a mere beginner, had a very good feeling for Shogi.
How do you assess western chess players' chances to become strong Shogi players?
Of course it is possible. Now all the professionals are Japanese, but there are aspirants in China. If more foreign people play Shogi, there will surely be professionals, too.
What other games do you enjoy playing?
Xiangqi, Changki (Korean chess), Backgammon, Go, etc.
In Xiangqi, I'm a beginner, but I'm proud that I have played with some of the very strongest masters of the game, like Mr. Zhao (GM Guorong ZHAO) and Mr. Liu (GM Dahua LIU).
