County Cups Trophy
6/7 May 2000
Well, if you're going to run a tournament, do it the easy way and have a field of 64; that's my advice! That's what happened at the County Cups this year and it ran very smoothly indeed.
Friday KO
(14 + 1 buy back)
Ah, well, back to normal after the fantastic entry of the 10th Party Friday KO. The quarter-finals saw Brian Lever beat John Clark (who had already decided not to accept the offer of free entry into the £50 or £10 pools as a grand gesture against the loss of equity such 'free' entries provide), and Roy Hollands beat me. In the final, Brian won and took the weekend break prize and Roy (by mutual agreement) took the cash! He's a wily one, that Roy!
Doubles
(16 teams)
A few new/funny names for you - 'Sweet & Sour', 'Clitoris Allsorts' which prompted the inevitable comment, "What's an allsort!", 'Timbuctoo' and 'The Dregs'. The latter team made it through to the final having beaten 'Gladys Knight & The Pip Counts' in the semi; and 'Timbuctoo' made it after beating 'Dod Willing' in their semi. In the final it was decided to split the money with the larger portion going to the winners...until the match score went to 4-4 that is. Then it was decided to alter the split to a more even sum! 'The Dregs' (formerly known as 'The Incredible Ones' or 'The Ayotollahs') did it again and came out on top.

County Cups Trophy
(64)
Swiss format tournaments always run smoothly for me; no Consolation or Last Chance or Suicide, just 6, 11-point matches in a row - easy peasy! The new system of only counting wins (points are no longer counted) ensured that anyone losing one match still had a chance of being Runner-up with 5 wins. And, although Dod Davies and Rob Dean sat down in the 6th Round with 5 wins each; the loser wasn't guaranteed to be the Runner-up; it did in fact turn out like that. However, at the time, due to a 'computer error' I mistakenly thought that two players had shared the Runner-up spot with 24 opponent wins each; Rob and Ian Tarr. But, when I got home and fully debugged the database the mistake was noticed and in fact Ian's opponent's wins were not 24 but 21, three less than my initial judgement.
Winner Dod Davies at last accepts a trophy he's not ashamed of being seen holding! |
I unreservedly apologise to Ian (who even posed for a photograph holding the trophy) and I will endeavour next time to be 100% certain of my facts before telling anyone their eventual position within the tournament. As a form of compensation I am offering Ian a 50% reduction off his next stay at the Hilton and a bottle of wine. Sorry Ian.
The Top Intermediate trophy (rightfully) went to Albert Tinker, playing in his second tournament. Well done, Albert.
Top Intermediate Player, Albert Tinker.

We now have a 7 qualifiers for the Ranking Championship with many more within qualifying distance in the next two tournaments. Shaun Herd heads the list with an average of 1827.67, just 26.34 ahead of Salvador Leongs 1801.33. In the Biba Grand Prix Championship Jeff Ellis has just managed to push his nose ahead of John Hurst by just one point: 29 to 28; but this narrow margin will be hard to defend as we are only 5/11ths of the way through the calendar.
