ROBIN CLAY (1927 - 2000)
It is with deep sadness that I report the death of Robin Clay who died on 29 November 2000 following a heart attack. He wasn't just a member of Biba but a friend too. I know I shall miss him and no doubt will his many backgammon friends throughout the world.
I first met Robin in 1988 in Coventry. I was playing in a National Backgammon Players Society tournament at the time. I remember Robin and Hercules (Baron of Culcreuch) particularly as they were trawling the playing room collecting names and addresses of players (a task for which I was extremely grateful 18 months later - but that is another story), one of which was mine. He joined Biba in July 1990 and has been a regular participant in tournaments ever since. |

Not many people can claim to have influenced over 200,000 others (99.99% of them complete strangers) but Robin did via his first book, "Teach Yourself Backgammon" which he wrote for Hodder Press in 1977. I asked Robin for a profile of himself for an article I was producing called, "Meet The Author" for the Bibafax just over one year ago; and, typical of him, he sent me a lengthy tome that made fascinating reading. Robin, with his wife, Sally, led an eventful and fulfilling life with many ups and downs; most of which he chronicled in his biography. It is this biography that I reproduce below, interspersed with extracts from Robin's books.
Although (in this life) we shall never see him again he will always be remembered through his books, and I for one will look forward to the next life where we can once again play backgammon. On behalf of all his many friends at Biba I would like to offer Robin's wife, Sally and her family our sincerest condolences.
Good luck, Robin, on yet another adventure.
Michael.
