Almost every website of note is covering the Corus tournament. In addition to the sites mentioned last week, www.ruschess.com is also offering live action & commentary. As usual, Leontxo Garcia has something interesting to say about the tournament combatants. Alekhine's tomb in Paris was damaged during a storm. Shelby Lyman analyses why Bobby Fischer is the favourite player of the millennium.

Leontxo Garcia continues his reporting on the Corus tournament. He relates the story of Van Wely (who was playing Short) copying the moves of Kasparov, who was playing the same opening at the same time. In the commentary room, GM Vlastimil Hort said, "To Kasparov, it doesn't matter to him. But if I were Short I would be upset because there is a difference between playing indirectly against Van Wely or Kasparov." [In Spanish.]

The Week In Chess
Further comments on the Burmese (Myanmar) FIDE ratings scandal. "So FIDE have endorsed Burma as the joint second (behind Russia, level with England) strongest nation in World chess as measured by those in the top 100." Reports the death of Alexey Vyzmanavin.

Europe Echecs
The tomb of Alexander Alekhine in Montparnasse in Paris was damaged during a heavy storm on December 26. Includes photo of the damage. In France, it was announced that "Chess has been recognized as a sport by the ministry for youth & sports." [In French.]

In his weekly column, Shelby analyses why Bobby Fischer is the favourite player of the millennium. "There are first of all the impeccable logic, beauty and decisiveness of his recorded games. That legacy continues to inspire many of today's players."
