Kasparov Chess
This is a new website. Some valuable comments are made in the article "Commercial Chess Programs: A Comparison." Part I of a long interview with Vladimir Kramnik. Live coverage (with GM analysis) of the Cadet Grand Prix games. Wijk ann Zee statistical forecast. Many tournament reports.

All-Girl Tourney in California
The Sojourner Truth Chess Tournament for Girls in Menlo Park, California, attracted 120 girls from throughout California & the West. The tournament helps reinforce the idea that it's OK for girls to play chess. On average, over half of elementary school players are girls, but by high school, girls represent only 5 percent.

FIDE
The January 2000 rating list is out. There is controversy surrounding the fact that 5 Myanmar players are listed in the top 100, and how they got there. Can they reach the top of the list without actually playing any top grandmasters? What will FIDE do, if anything, to stop them from making a sham of the rating system?

Inside Chess Online
Edward Winter reviews the reviewers of his book. IM John Donaldson has written two lengthy articles on Alexander Alekhine and Boris Spassky.

El Pais
Leontxo Garcia recaps Peter Leko's victory over Alexander Khalifman. Garcia says Khalifman will be humiliated at Linares if he can't reconstruct his arsenal of openings and defenses. "Khalifman lacks an appropriate repertoire for the champion of the world." [In Spanish.]

The Week In Chess
An open letter from Feng-hsiung Hsu, one of the main programmers of Deep Blue. He says Kasparov is not really interested in a rematch, despite his many public statements. Hsu's attempts to market the Deep Blue chess chip have been unsuccessful as well. "I believe that this is the end of the Deep Blue saga."

Lubomir Kavalek
Kavalek mentions the TWIC Millennium Poll and wonders what specific advice Fischer & Kasparov can give to young players. He finds his answer. Fischer once said "Occupy and control the center." Kasparov once wrote "Try to get control of the center squares, protect the center and value it dearly."

The Chess Cafe
Tim Krabbe joins the Cafe January 12. Entries are closed for the holiday quiz.

About.com
In the "Chess School," the Net has been scoured for material to help beginners. A new poll on the Sicilian defense.

Polgar Chess Center
Susan Polgar will give a simultaneous exhibition at her center in New York on Saturday, January 29. Several articles on this website related to the women's world championship situation including Polgar's own viewpoints.
