Soviet Chess Secrets
In his Washington Post column, Lubomir Kavalek discusses an unknown Russian chessplayer who walked into the Manhattan Chess Club 25 years ago offering to sell the secrets of the Soviet School of Chess for $10,000. Reviews Andrew Soltis' "Soviet Chess 1917-1991."

Club Kasparov
Garry Kasparov gives his thoughts on the 20th century: "Humanity has really matured and advanced with seven-league strides to the realization of the unlimited nature of its opportunities!" Mark Glukhovsky talks about upcoming tournaments and events, including the Khalifman-Leko match. A Junior Grand Prix ("The first major online tournament") is to begin January 8 at this website.

Bobby Fischer's Legacy
A lengthy essay in "The Hindu" on Fischer's importance to the chess world and how he changed the game. "He is the most important figure in the history of chess."

Chess is Booming in Utah
The Utah Chess Association President says youngsters in his state are spurning TV for chess clubs. 160 Utah schools have set up clubs.

Caissa Cafe
A recent book includes two short entries on chess & the KGB. Entitled "The Sword & The Shield: The Mitrokhin Archive & The Secret History of the KGB," it claims 18 KGB officers congregated to make sure Karpov won the 1978 Karpov-Korchnoi match. It also mentions the arrest of Pachman. [In Portuguese.]

Bobby Fischer won the Millennium Poll, with Kasparov second. Khalifman will play at Linares, replacing Morozevich. FIDE has paid all players from Las Vegas, thus avoiding a crisis.

FIDE
In a recent press release, FIDE looks back at achievements in 1999 and discusses goals for 2000. Outstanding payments of prize monies have now been made.
