In his Washington Post column, Lubomir Kavalek discusses an unknown
Russian chessplayer who walked into the Manhattan Chess Club 25
years ago offering to sell the secrets of the Soviet School of
Chess for $10,000. Reviews Andrew Soltis' "Soviet Chess 1917-1991."

Garry Kasparov gives his thoughts on the 20th century: "Humanity has
really matured and advanced with seven-league strides to the
realization of the unlimited nature of its opportunities!"
Mark Glukhovsky talks about upcoming tournaments and events,
including the Khalifman-Leko match. A Junior Grand Prix ("The first major

The Utah Chess Association President says youngsters in his state are
spurning TV for chess clubs. 160 Utah schools have set up clubs.

it claims 18 KGB officers congregated to make sure Karpov won the
