THE WINTER-SCHILLER FEUD heats up as Edward Winter responds to Eric Schiller's accusations against him. The 2000 U.S. Championship appears to have been canceled. The Boston Globe reports that in the 20th century, chess was transformed from a pastime for intellectuals into a mainstream activity.

A "Statement by Edward Winter regarding Eric Schiller." The Winter-Schiller battle heats up as Winter responds to allegations made by Schiller on www.chesscity.com that he was unaware there were two matches between Lasker & Tarrasch. Winter accuses Schiller of various gross errors in his books. Anatoly Karpov played on chess.net December 26 in several blitz games with other grandmasters.

2000 U.S. Championship Canceled
According to Don Schultz, the 2000 U.S. Championship has been canceled. Apparently some members of the USCF Executive Board want to demonstrate how bad the financial situation has become. Read his editorial here.

The Boston Globe reports that in the 20th century, chess was transformed from a recreation for intellectuals into a popular mainstream activity. The high point of the game was its championship matches.

Super Ajedrez
Super Ajedrez celebrates its second year online this week. During their first month online, they attracted 1,000 visitors. Now they have 1,000 per day. An article on the mystery surrounding the origin of the game of chess and the possibility it was born in India. [In Spanish.]

Leontxo Garcia reports that Linares 2000 will be played 28 February to 12 March. The six participants are Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, Alexei Shirov, Vladimir Kramnik, Alexander Morozevich, and Peter Leko. A feature on 17-year-old Paco Vallejo, one of the top 10 players of his age in the world. The Pamplona tournament will take place January 5. Participants include Judit Polgar, Boris Gelfand, Nigel Short, Jan Timman, Zoltan Almasi, Miguel Illescas, Joel Lautier, & the young Spanish sensation Paco Vallejo. [In Spanish.]

Chess Mate
IWM Koneru Humpy, an Indian girl, won the Asian U-12 Boys Championship. She is the first girl after Judit Polgar to win a Boys event.
