Iran is Ready to Host WC
Iran is gearing up for the FIDE world championship final to be held in Tehran December 21 to 31. On the question of Israelis qualifying for the final, FIDE VP P.T. Ummer Koya said, "I discussed the matter with the Iranian government officials during my visit and I was told that there were 150,000 Jews living in Iran. Iran will oppose only if a player comes directly from Israel. I don't think this issue is going to affect the conduct of the World championship."
China to Host World Cup
"Twenty four players will be invited for the event. They are the current World champion, the best junior in the FIDE rating list of January, the highest rated female player, two nominees of the FIDE President on the recommendation of the World Chess Cup Committee, one nominee of the host federation, eight players comprising the best two from each of the previous continental championships and the 10 highest rated players."
Antonio's Prize Winnings are Taxable
The Philippine Bureau of Internal Revenue finally ruled that GM Rogelio Antonio and all other winners owed the government a 20 percent final tax on their earnings from the recent Pambansa Millennium Chess Grand Prix.
