Fischer on Mexican TV?
Ajelibre reports that a huge chess event is planned in Mexico on June 4. Kasparov will attend to play simuls. Bobby Fischer reportedly will appear on live TV from Budapest in a hookup with Manila. The show is to be directed by IM Raul Ocampo Vargas. [In Spanish.]

Robert Byrne
In his weekly New York Times column, Byrne says the players in the recent Pula Zonal believe they are on a path to play for the world championship, but the process will not result in a match with Kasparov. "The best they can do is to contest a foreshortened knockout match, like last year's event sponsored by the International Chess Federation, and the cognoscenti hold that in contempt." In his weekly column, Shelby writes about how Sophia Polgar has taken up the gauntlet for women in chess: "They have no less fighting spirit, she says, than many of the so-called `male fighters' who are often willing to accept a quick and peaceful draw to conserve their strength for the next round."

FIDE Championship Update
Many Indian corporations have shown interest in sponsoring the FIDE Championships to be held in India this November. "Not only will the World championship bring India respect from the top chess playing countries of the world but also will also give the game in the country a big boost. Being an official World championship, a large contingent of international media is expected and the event cannot be relegated to an unimportant column in the newspaper."
