LINARES WILL take place in 2000, according to Leontxo Garcia, but who will be able to play? A German magazine conducted a poll of chess luminaries and Bobby Fischer was voted best player of the century. U.S. toy giant Hasbro is moving into the increasingly-crowded online gaming industry. The latest research into memory sheds light on how chessplayers remember positions.

Leontxo Garcia reports that Linares will in fact take place in 2000. Several companies were called on to save the historic tournament. Now the trick is to convince the world's best players to adjust their schedules so they can compete. [In Spanish.]

Terra Ajedrez
According to a survey in the German magazine "Schach," Bobby Fischer is the greatest chessplayer of the century. Illustrious chessplayers such as Korchnoi, Shirov, and Short, were asked for their votes. Fischer received 25 of a total of 64 votes. Garry Kasparov received 17 votes. Emanuel Lasker was third. Khalifman-Leko will be played in Budapest 3-9 January. Terra will cover the event with online commentaries in Spanish & English. [In Spanish.]

Hasbro Moves Family Games Online
Hasbro Inc. is moving to capitalize on the rapidly-growing market of online gaming. The U.S.'s second-largest toymaker announced plans to offer many games, such as chess, through a partnership with Go2Net Inc. An online portal, games.com, will be launched by mid-2000.

How the Brain Creates Memories
A long article about the latest scientific research into memory. Two psychologists at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh studied chessplayers & found that practice - more than exceptional memories - could account for differences between individuals. Grandmasters were no better than beginners at recalling random positions. Includes advice for improving your memory.

Sunday, December 5 was designated as "Aarthie's Day," in honor of India's World Under-18 Champion Aarthie Ramaswamy. "I hope to see you all again as a woman grand master," she said during the festivities.

18-year-old Karen Birkendahl has accepted a 4-year scholarship at the University of Texas at Dallas' nationally ranked chess program. Discusses the trouble women have in the chess world. Only 4 percent of USCF members are female.
