GM Einar Gausel annotates the WCC

Dreev (2676) - Topalov (2707)
FIDE WC New Delhi (4.1), 2000

1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 a6 5.b3 Bg4 6.Nbd2 Nbd7 7.Bb2 e6 8.Bd3 Bd6 9.Qc2 Qc7 10.0-0 Bh5 11.h3 0-0

12.c5!?

The general idea is to establish a stronghold for the knight on e5 and then try to mobilise an attack on the enemy king.

12...Be7 13.Ne5 Kh8 14.f4

14...Nxe5?

Inviting White to do his worst on the kingside, looks completely irrational. Black is slightly cramped, but very solid after 14...Bg6.

15.fxe5 Nd7 16.Bxh7 g6

17.g4 f5?

17...Bxg4 18.Bxg6 Bxh3 19.Rxf7 Rxf7 20.Bxf7 Bg5 was Black's best shot at fighting back.

18.gxh5 Kxh7 19.hxg6+ Kg7

White's attack looks absolutely terrifying after 19...Kxg6 20.e4! dxe4 21.Nxe4 fxe4 22.Kh1!

20.Kh2 Nf6

20...Rf6 looked like a better try.

21.Rf4 Ne4

22.Nxe4

Simple and strong.

22...dxe4 23.Rg1 Rh8 24.Qc4 Qa5

The grim alternative was 24...Qd7 25.Rxf5! with the tactical point 25...exf5 26.Qf7+ Kh6 27.g7 and Black gets his head handed to him.

25.Rf2 resigns.

Black will be utterly gift-wrapped after Qxe6.

1-0
