Round Six/ Semifinals

Webmaster Chris Dickson with more statistical revelations:

Just two matches in the men's semi-finals, so once more we demanded precision and exact scores in order for success even making you guess what stage of the tie- breaker procedure each match would reach. In the end, neither game went to a tie-breaker so anyone tempted down that route lost out.

In order to stand any chance of winning, we required first that you got both winners correct. This reduced the 33 votes to a field of 15.

From the incorrect votes, 13 went for Adams-Shirov and 4 went for Anand-Grischuk - so at least everybody who submitted a full entry managed to get one of the finalists right. (The mean number of winners predicted was 1.44 with median and modal values of 1.)

However, in order to pick a winner, we required you to get the scores correct as well. Those score predictions split as follows:

Prediction summary
Wins in -> 2½-½  3-1  2½-1½ TB in 2 TB in 4 sudden death
ANAND (- Adams) 0 2 7 3 2 1
SHIROV (- Grischuk) 2 1 10 1 1 0

So, once again, the most popular choice for winner has proved correct and the most popular choice for the winning score has also proved correct. We should place a bet on the final according to what you say ...

There was considerable crossover between the seven who picked the Anand score and the ten who predicted the Shirov score - so we need to hold a tie-breaker between the five of you with perfect scores: Alfred Wallace, Terry Fung, Roly Tan, Rafael Frisch and pax. Many congratulations to you all!

Below we can see who has picked a winner when, columns for final result and overall champion are still blank, and the number of wins. Alfred Wallace can be caught but not overtaken.
