Not surprisingly the heavy favorite was ... the heavy favorite - highly rated and popular Indian GM Anand.

Perhaps the most startling revelation of this table was the lack of faith in Alexei Shirov. I'm sure he would have been a very popular champion, but that didn't mean the public was willing to bet on him.
