Earlier this year it appeared the U.S. Championship would not be held in 2000, due to various problems, but now the United States Chess Federation (USCF) has announced that a new foundation has backed the event, which is scheduled for September 25 to October 6 at The Golf Club at Newcastle (near Seattle), in Washington state.
The newly-formed Seattle Chess Foundation is backing the event with a $100,000 prize fund. Former Microsoft eecutive Scott Oki is one of the founding underwriters of the new foundation, which has the rights to the U.S. Championship for the next 10 years.
The list of players to be invited is not yet finalized. Twelve men will compete for the men's title, and 10 of the top female players will vie for the women's title.
Announcements concerning live web broadcasts are forthcoming.
