Round 9
Hillarp Persson-Golod: An interesting Grunfeld Exchange where white got 2 bishops for a rook and pawn. But white's king was in a precarious position, sitting on e1. Hillarp Persson made a terrible blunder at move 27. His king was caught in a mating net and to avoid it he would have lost his queen, so he resigned after 29 moves.
Nilssen-Mikhalevski: Benko Gambit where white played b6 instead of taking on the a-file. In the rook, bishop, and pawn ending, white was prevented from queening his pawn due to a mate threat. Down a bishop, white resigned in 60 moves.
Round 8
Hansen-Hillarp Persson: A quick little 12-move draw.
Psakhis-McShane: A KID where Psakhis sacrificed a knight for a kingside attack. McShane defended and Psakhis took a perpetual check with his rook for a draw in 45 moves.
Schandorff-Gulko: An English where Gulko got a passed h-pawn in the ending and Schandorff could never take it. When it finally queened, white had to lose a piece so he resigned in 43 moves.
Brynell-Baburin: IM Brynell upset Baburin and his patented Alekhine defense. Baburin couldn't stop white's passed a-pawn and resigned in 37 moves.
Round 7
McShane-Golod: a Ruy Lopez Open where Golod gave up a bishop for 2 connected passed pawns on the queenside. But McShane eventually captured both, then stopped Golod's passed h-pawn on the other side of the board. Down a piece, Golod resigned in 52 moves. A great tournament performance by McShane so far.
Eriksson-Hansen: A queen pawn opening with locked up pawns, but Hansen broke through on the kingside, winning a piece and the game in 40 moves.
Hillarp Persson-Simonsen: Tiger played 1. g3 and gained a central space advantage. He doubled up rooks on the h-file, taking the pawn on h7. He won the exchange and black resigned in 41 moves.
Round 6
Hansen-Gulko was a QGD, Ragozin. Hansen held a middlegame edge as he pinned Gulko's knight to his king on g8 and had a rook on the h-file at h1. But Hansen missed his chance to win the game. Gulko consolidated and the game was drawn in 43 moves.
Psakhis-Mortensen was a Sicilian Alapin that melted into a knight+pawn ending. Psakhis won a pawn with his knight and that was all he needed to win in 49 moves.
Ginsburg-Hillarp Persson was a Torre Attack where black got some advantage in the opening but Ginsburg weathered the storm until he blundered on move 31 then overstepped the time limit after 32 moves in a lost position.
Baburin-DeFirmian was a Nimzo-Indian drawn in 30 moves. There appeared to still be some play left in the position.
Round 5
4th Round leaders DeFirmian and Golod drew, and Hector lost. There are now 5 players tied for the lead: DeFirmian, Golod, Gulko, Hansen, and Schandorff.
Gulko-Hector was an English opening that suddenly turned wild as Gulko pushed his g- and h-pawns forward in the opening. Gulko ran his king to the queenside while Hansen's monarch was caught in the middle. Hansen resigned in 31 moves under a kingside assault.
Bekker-Jensen-Hansen was a Dutch where black won the exchange while white collected a few pawns with his queen. Black took the open d-file with his rook, and with his queen controlling the e-file, white had to resign in 34 moves. Bekker-Jensen appeared to miss a drawing resource a couple moves before the end.
Schandorff-Mittelmann was an English opening where white won black's isolated c-pawn, then later picked up the a-pawn, giving him 2 connected passed pawns on the queenside. Black lost on time in 37 moves, but his position was critical in any event.
DeFirmian-Golod was a Ruy Lopez Open drawn in 28 moves.
Baburin-McShane was a King's Indian defense drawn in 26 moves.
Round 4
Ginsburg-DeFirmian was a 1. c4 c5 English. DeFirmian broke through on the f-file, winning white's d-pawn. The game was over after 25 moves but Ginsburg tried some tactics before resigning in 34 moves.
Hector played the swashbuckling King's Gambit and Hvenekilde buckled early under white's assault on f7. But black managed to get the queens off and had tempered the storm when he blundered away a rook and resigned in 31 moves.
Golod wore down Hoi's Modern to win with a passed g-pawn in 53 moves.
McShane-Gulko was a 14-move draw. Mortensen-Baburin was an Alekhine drawn in 24 moves.

Gulko won a Semi-Slav Anti-Meran battle with Brinck-Claussen.
Baburin's game with Skytte was no coffee break. After a Queen's Gambit Accepted, the FM battled back from an inferior opening position. In the rook+pawn endgame, Baburin had 3 pawns to 2 on the kingside, exchanging down to a passed g-pawn for the win in 68 moves.
McShane found himself in a slightly inferior position after a Ruy Lopez Schliemann, but Simonsen left his king vulnerable to a white queen and rook on the 7th. He resigned in 31 moves, though he could have defended and played on, as the game was not yet decided.
