White's insipid 3rd move against the Caro Kann Defence, 3 f2-f3, led to a French Defence position in which the f3 square is needed for other purposes. In the game, after 7...Ng8-e7, White would like to play Ng1-f3 or Qd1-g4 (the normal moves in the Winawer Variation of the French), but in this case neither move is legal. Therefore White had to give back a tempo by playing 8 f3-f4 (Black had sacrificed a tempo earlier by playing ...c7-c6 followed by ...c6-c5). But after 8 f3-f4 White was in an inferior variation of the Winawer, which allowed Black to play a number of thematic moves on the Q-side without having to worry about White's plans on the K-side.
Suddenly Black's knight invaded the white position to devastating effect.
