Tan Chin Nam Cup: Bologan First on Tiebreaks

Viktor Bologan won the 6th Tan Chin Nam Cup held July 9 to 18 in Beijing, China. There was a 4-way tie for first between Bologan, Nigel Short, Alexander Onischuk, and Alexei Dreev, with Bologan winning on tiebreaks. Website: http://www.sinosports.net. Games in PGN.

Lev Psakhis of Israel won the Andorra Open held June 24 to July 2 with a score of 7.5/9. Tied for second with 7 points were Mihail Marin and Hichem Hamdouchi.

Mirzoev, Kruppa Win White Nights

Volkov Wins 53rd Russian Championship

Sergey Volkov won the 53rd Russian Championship held June 16 to 27 in Samara with a score of 8.0/11. 62 players competed in this FIDE zonal with 3 qualifiers receiving an invitation to the world championships. Also qualifying were Alexander Rustemov and Andrei Kharlov.

GM Zoltan Almasi of Hungary defeated GM Etienne Bacrot of France in a match held June 27 to July 2 in Szeged by a score of 3.5 to 2.5.

Onischuk Wins Ukrainian Zonal 1.9

Alexander Onischuk won the Ukrainian Zonal 1.9 held June 7 to 19 in Ordzhonikidze with a score of 6.5/9. 3 players qualified for the FIDE world championships: Onischuk, Vladimir Baklan, and Vereslav Eingorn.

Kasparov Beats Sting and His Band

In a match held at Times Square Studios in New York City, Garry Kasparov played a simul against Sting, guitarist Dominic Miller, keyboardist Jason Rebello, trumpet player Chris Botti and backup singer Russ Irwin. Kasparov won all the games. "We've played together before, so I knew it was going to be a public humiliation, Sting said. "I had no illusions about this. But it's worth it to play the world champion."

KasparovChess World Champion School Results

The First KasparovChess World Champion Schools have been determined. The Elementary Section was won by Elkana School of Israel. The team is coached by IM Michael Oratovski. The Junior High School Section champion is Hunter College School from New York City. Their coach is FM Sunil Weeramantry. The High School Section champion is Norges Toppidrettsgymnas of Norway. Geist, Traldi Win US Cadet Championship

14-year-old Mark Geist of Johnstown, Ohio, and 15-year-old Matthew Traldi of Easton, Pennsylvania, tied for first place in the 2000 US Cadet Chess Championship held June 22-26 at the Mechanic's Institute in San Fransisco, California.

Geist drew his final game with 13-year-old Joshua Friedel of Goffstown, New Hampshire, while Traldi won against 14-year-old A. J. Steigman of Coral Springs, Florida to tie for first place with a score of 5.0/7 points. Geist, who defeated Traldi in their individual game, was the leader throughout the event and was the only undefeated player in the Championship. Traldi started slowly, but won his final three games to become National Co-Champion.

Geist just completed his freshman year at New Albany High School in New Albany, OH. He began playing chess at the age of four. He won the National First Grade Championship in 1991 and the National Second Grade Championship in 1992. Traldi just completed his sophomore year at Easton Area High School in Easton, PA. He is the first rock musician to win a national chess championship. He is a member of the alternative rock band Li'l Nero, which will release its first CD this summer.

Zhukova wins the European Women's Chess Championship

Natalia Zhukova of the Ukraine defeated Ekaterina Kovalevskaya of Russia 2.5-1.5 in the final to win the First European Women's Chess Championship in Batumi, Georgia May 26 to June 14. In the semi-finals, Zhukova beat Stepovaia, and Kovalevskaya beat Chiburdanidze.

El Taher Wins Cairo Zonal 4.2

Fouad El Taher won a playoff for first place in the Cairo 4.2 FIDE zonal held June 6 to 14. 10 players competed. In second was Ibrahim Hasan Labib, and third was Walaa Sarwat, all of Egypt.

Kunte is New Indian National Champion

Abhijit Kunte won his second Indian national title with a 13.5/18 score. The championship was held May 15 to June 5.
