Surrey Easter Congress 2000

The Surrey County Chess Association Easter Congress 2000 was held April 21 to 24 at the Carshalton High School of Girls (UK). Results:

The "Frank Winter" Memorial Open Tournament (FIDE Rated), 7 Round Swiss, 60 Competitors:

1 Andrew Webster South Norwood 6 (£400)
2= John Benjamin Richmond 5½ (£117)
Graeme Buckley Bushbury 5½ (£117)
Peter Kemp Streatham 5½ (£117)

For the second year running, International Master Andrew Webster walked away with first prize; this time having scored 6 points as opposed to the 6½ points he scored last year. He relinquished the SCCU title that he won last year, though, as this was contested at the Southend Congress. Unlike last year when Grandmasters were not to be seen, there was one this year. Colin McNab (Scotland) failed to take advantage of this and didn't find his way into the prize money. Nor did top seed Danny Gormally (Coulsdon), who along with McNab, scored only 4½. There were two other International Masters on duty; one being Graeme Buckley (Bushbury), who with 5½ points shared second place with John Benjamin (Richmond) and Peter Kemp (Streatham). Yochanan Afek (Israel) was another to finish with 4½.

Philip Bonafont of Gerrards Cross caught everyone's eye. He had arrived at the event expecting to play in the Premier, only to find that his new "corrected" grade was 170. Seemingly reluctantly, he agreed to play in the Open. After 7 rounds, he had only beaten McNab and drawn with Buckley and Webster. He remained unbeaten until the final round when a loss to Kemp denied him the prize money that his performance deserved.

Premier Tournament (Under 170 Event), 7 Round Swiss, 41 Competitors:

1 Andrew Horton-Kitchlew ISH 6 (£240)
2 Craig Young St Albans 5½ (£120)
3= Andrew Fleming Eastbourne 5 (£30)
Dominic Gibbs Flying Teapots 5 (£30)
Martin Page Insurance 5 (£30)
Ido Porat Israel 5 (£30)

On the other side of the coin to Philip Bonafont in the Open, Andy Kitchlew arrived half-expecting to play in the top section. Having discovered his "corrected grade" was 169, he proceeded to take out the Premier Section, scoring 6 points. A last round draw against Craig Young kept him in front, but gave Craig second place. It was a good week for Craig as he went on to beat Danny Gormally in the simultaneous event held at Coulsdon a couple of days later. Four players tied for third place: Andrew Fleming (Eastbourne), Dominic Gibbs (Flying Teapots), Martin Page (Insurance) and Ido Porat (Israel) all scored 5½.

Blitz Event (Open), 7 Round Swiss, 52 Competitors:

1 Danny Gormally Coulsdon & Purley 6½ (£50)
u200 Shi Porat Israel 5½ (£25)

The addition of the obligatory CCF Blitz event was a big plus. It saw 52 players battle it out over 7 rounds and Danny Gormally (Coulsdon) come out with 6½ points, winning the event. Everyone who played seemed pleased that the Congress had been given a suitable finale, instead of players drifting off at different times as had been the routine in the past.

GM Arthur Dake Dies at 90

The Oregonian reports that grandmaster Arthur Dake died Friday, April 28, in Reno, Nevada, after a night of blackjack, "his second-favorite game." Dake was 90 years old.

In 1932, Dake was the first U.S. player to defeat a reigning world champion--Alexander Alekhine. He was an important factor on three gold-medal Olympic teams and was inducted into the USCF Hall of Fame in 1991. Economic pressures of the 1930s and 1940s forced Dake away from the game. He spent many years working for the Portland Department of Motor Vehicles where he was first a driving-test administrator and later a supervisor. He retired at age 63.

Dake's best years on the chessboard were in the 1930s. He won the Marshall Chess Club Championship in 1930, and tied for first at Antwerp 1931 with Rubinstein and Yates. The grandmaster title was awarded to Dake in 1986, in recognition of his outstanding achievements during the 1930s.

Aussie Chess players Face Ban for Fighting

The Reuters News Agency has reported that two chess players are facing bans from the Australian Chess Federation (ACF) for participating in a physical altercation during a Grand Prix tournament.

ACF President Graeme Gardiner is waiting for a report on Monday's brawl before deciding what action he will take.

"It is quite possible there will be a ban (but) I want to be in full possession of the facts," Gardiner said. After he receives a written report, Gardiner will discuss the problem with the ACF Council.

The two players in question are David Beaumont and Alexander Gaft, who punched each other during the fourth round of the prestigious Doeberl Cup in Canberra.

Beaumont complained that Gaft, who had finished his own game, was disrupting him while he was playing another opponent. According to witnesses, the argument soon turned violent. Punches were traded and the two competitors grappled with each other until they were eventually pulled apart by other players.

"We have had people thrown out of the tournament before but never for fighting," chief arbiter Shaun Press said. "Beaumont was sorely provoked but retaliation is no excuse."

Both men were disqualified from the tournament. Said one onlooker, "It is one of the most disgusting things I have seen at a chess tournament. How can an intellectual pursuit degrade itself in this way?"

Stefansson Reigns in Reykjavik

Icelandic GM Hannes Stefansson won the 19th Reykjavik Open held April 5-13 at Reykjavik City Hall with a score of 7½/9. His victory was somewhat unexpected, given the high level of the competition. In the final round, he took a short 13-move draw with GM Alexander Grischuk to asure himself of clear first place, and the first prize of USD 5000.

Quick draws are common in the final round of swiss tournaments, as many players are afraid to be left out of the prize pot and may lack confidence in their ability to avoid a loss. Some just want to go home. Miles-Bu ended in a draw after 12 moves, and Timman-Sokolov was drawn after only 11 moves. Short-Ehlvest was drawn after 32 moves.

Christiansen-Korchnoi, however, was played to the end, with the living legend winning a bishop-and-pawn ending. Wojtkiewicz outlasted De Firmian for a win in 41 moves.

Tied for second place with 6½ were: Victor Korchnoi, Nigel Short, Jaan Ehlvest, Tony Miles, Xiangzhi Bu, Aleksander Wojtkiewicz, and Alexander Grischuk.

official tournament website.

Teenage Girl Wins Lithuanian Men's Chess Championship

The Associated Press is reporting that a 16-year-old schoolgirl, Viktorija Cmilyte, won the Lithuanian Men's Chess Championship this weekend. Considered one of Lithuania's top players, Cmilyte won five out of nine games to win the men's championship, drawing three and losing only one game.

The president of Lithuania's chess federation, Ceslovas Jursenas, said he wasn't surprised Cmilyte finished ahead of the rest of the field, which included several world-class grandmasters. "I knew Viktorija could take care of herself...We are proud of our new champion," he said.
