Miguel Najdorf

Miguel Najdorf was a well known figure in the chess world for over half a century. He himself often said that he had played with every world champion except Steinitz. Najdorf was well known not only for his tremendous skill which almost took him to a world championship match, but also for his sparkling personality.

Najdorf's international career took off after World War II, which was a major personal tragedy for him. Being a Polish Jew, he decided not to return to Poland after the German invasion in 1939. At that time he was playing in Argentina. That South American country was to become his home for the rest of his life.

The best times in Najdorf's career were the late 40's and early 50's, when he was considered to be one of the world's top ten players. He faced all the greats, including Botvinnik, Fischer, Smyslov and Tal.

Najdorf's style was very tactical and attacking, and he gave his name to one of the sharpest lines in the Sicilian defence: 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cd 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6.

Najdorf died in 1997, and continued to participate in chess tournaments to his last months.
