Ehlvest Wins Zonal, Kveinys Second
Jaan Ehlvest won the Latvia zonal with 10 points, a point-and-a-half ahead of second-place finisher Kveinys.
Külaots and Rõtshagov tied for third with 8 points. Since three players qualigy for the world championships, they will contest a playoff to see which of them advances.

Külaots Hanging onto 3rd Qualifying Spot
With only one round left, Kaido Külaots is hanging onto the third qualifying spot by a half-point over Rõtshagov. Ehlvest is assured of winning the zonal and Kveinys is in second, half a point ahead of Külaots. In the final round, Kveinys plays Ehlvest, Külaots plays Miezes, and Rõtshagov plays Meijers. Ehlvest Rises to the Top
Top-rated Jaan Ehlvest of Estonia has taken the lead with 3.5/4. Early leader Kiik was unceremoniously booted from the top of the leaderboard when he lost in rounds 3 and 4.
In Round 3, Ehlvest pummeled Meijers from the Black side of a Sicilian. In Round 4, his g3 queen-pawn setup dropped Krakops in 41 moves. Kveinys unleashed the Bishop Opening to outlast Meijers in 58 moves.
Kiik put up a long struggle in his 3rd and 4th round games, but still eventually lost both. Viktorija Cmilyte drew her games the last 2 rounds (with Kveinys and Kulaots), after a slow start with 2 losses.

Kiik Early Leader at Mezezers Zonal
The FIDE Baltic Zonal 1.7 tournament runs from June 6 to 18 in Mezezers, Latvia. Among the competitors is Viktorija Cmilyte, who made headlines recently when she won the men's Lithuanian championship. She is off to a rocky start with no points after 2 rounds. Miezis beat her with an unusual Benoni where he placed his king-bishop on c7. Ehlvest beat her with an English opening in 33 moves.
Tournament leader Kiik defeated Labuckas with the King's Indian Attack. He beat Slapikas' Alapin Sicilian in 48 moves.
