Round 10: Ladies Hang On for the Win

The Veterans won Round 10 by 3-2, but it wasn't nearly enough, as the Ladies win the match 27-23. Korchnoi won the individual contest with 7.5 points. Ioseliani and Xie tied for 2nd-3rd with 6.5.

Korchnoi-Xie
The grand old warrior of chess threw his pawns forward against Xie's King's Indian in an all-out assault on her kingside. After winning the pawn on h7, Korchnoi worked on the h- and g-files for a blitzkrieg win over the Chinese dragon lady in 29 moves.

Bouwmeester-Zhu
Tournament tail-ender Bouwmeester came to life in the final round for a long endgame win over the other Chinese dragon lady. Down 3 pawns, Zhu resigned in 60 moves.

Taimanov-Galliamova
Galliamova destroyed Taimanov by stopping him from castling then smoking the monarch out to g3 for the win in only 23 moves.

Round 9: Veterans Dent Ladies' Huge Lead

The Veterans won Round 9 by a 3-2 score, but with only one round remaining, the men need a 5-0 whitewashing in Saturday's final round to finish with a tie match. The Ladies lead 25-20. Korchnoi and Xie are tied for the individual lead with 6.5 points.

Zhu-Korchnoi
A Queen's Gambit Declined that was even after 39 moves until Zhu took Korchnoi's h-pawn with her rook, missing a queen move by black winning the rook with a simple tactic.

Polgar-Taimanov
After a Sicilian, Polgar queened her passed b-pawn. Taimanov was left with a rook, knight, bishop and 3 pawns; Polgar had a queen, bishop, and 2 pawns. The Russian pushed his passed d-pawn until Polgar was forced to sack her bishop for it after 53 moves. Now it was a rook and 2 pieces versus the queen. Taimanov went about the long, difficult business of winning Polgar's 2 remaining pawns, which he accomplished after 91 moves. Unable to stop Taimanov's advancing h-pawn, Polgar gave up after 118 moves.

Galliamova-Bouwmeester
A Queen's Gambit Declined with Bf4. Galliamova won the rook+pawn ending when Bouwmeester was unable to stop her 2 passed pawns.

Round 8: Men, Women Battle Equally

Hort tamed one of the dreaded Chinese dragon ladies while Ioseliani played a requiem for Taimanov. The day ended 2.5 to 2.5. The Ladies lead in the overall standings 23 to 17. Xie Jun is the individual leader with 6 points.

Hort-Zhu
After a queen pawn opening, Hort threatened mate on the long diagonal. Zhu was forced to give up a rook. Hort got the queens off and mopped up in 45 moves.

Taimanov-Ioseliani
After an English opening, Ioseliani grabbed a pawn, then another, and pushed her passed a-pawn for the win in 47 moves.

Korchnoi-Galliamova
In a minor-piece ending, Korchnoi had 2 extra pawns, but the bishops were of opposite colors, so a draw in 73 moves.

Bouwmeester-Polgar
Although up 2 pawns after the opening, Bouwmeester was apparently happy to draw with Polgar in 26 moves.

Round 7: Ladies Upbraid Veterans Again

Showing no mercy, the Ladies put the pedal to the metal and won another round, this time by the score of 3.5 to 1.5. The Ladies' overall lead is 20.5 to 14.5.

Xie Jun continued her fine play with a win over Taimanov. After a Sicilian, a rook+ pawn endgame arrived with the Chinese lady enjoying a pawn advantage. She picked off a few more and the game ended in 60 moves with Xie having 2 pawns to zero for Taimanov.

Ioseliani-Bouwmeester was a Nimzo-Indian where the lady captured 2 pawns out of the opening, and the game was already decided then. Unable to reestablish material equality, Bouwmeester resigned in 31 moves.

Galliamova-Hort was a Bogo-Indian where the lady eventually got passed a- and h-pawns. Unable to stop white from queening one of them, Hort resigned after 83 moves.

As usual, Korchnoi scored a point for the Veterans. In a French McCutcheon, he walked his king all the way over to the a-file while advancing his queenside pawns. Korchnoi queened his a-pawn, then ate a few white pawns for the win.

Zhu-Smyslov was an English battle drawn in 56 moves.

Round 6: A Standoff

Both sides won 2 games while the other was drawn for a 2.5 to 2.5 draw. The Ladies' overall lead over the Veterans is 17 to 13.

The Chinese Dragon Ladies strike again! Xie and Zhu both won again (and are tied for the lead in the individual standings). Bouwmeester played a slow Catalan setup against Xie. With the time control approaching, material was even, but Xie won a pawn, then another, then forced a queen trade, and Bouwmeester resigned in 44 moves.

After an English opening, Zhu gradually picked off several of Taimanov's pawns, then forced a queen trade for the win in 54 moves.

Korchnoi remained the Veterans' iron man, winning against Ioseliani in 64 moves by topping her in a rook+pawn ending. Hort forced Polgar's knight out of the action to a8 then pushed his passed d-pawn to the 6th rank for the win in 34 moves. It's shaping up as a tough tournament for Sofia. Smyslov-Galliamova was an Alapin Sicilian drawn in 43 moves when neither could win the rook+pawn ending.

Round 5: Veterans Flex Their Muscles

Having been whipped into submission the previous rounds, the Veterans flexed their muscles in Round 5 for a 3.5 to 1.5 victory, closing the Ladies' overall margin to 14.5 to 10.5.

Smyslov hit paydirt with his 3...g6 Ruy Lopez against Polgar. After Polgar's king position was ripped open, Smyslov pushed his passed e-pawn triumphantly down main street for the win in only 28 moves.

Taimanov outplayed Galliamova from an even endgame, winning a piece, then marching his a-pawn to the 7th for the duke.

Xie and Korchnoi brawled over a long Sicilian. Korchnoi emerged with an extra passed h-pawn, but Xie stopped it for the draw in 53 moves. After a Catalan opening, Zhu eventually lost the exchange to Bouwmeester. But the Chinese lady got a passed c-pawn and the veteran had to guard against its queening, so a draw was agreed after 48 moves. Ioseliani-Hort was a King's Indian drawn in 49 moves. Great fighting chess in every game.

Round 4: Chinese Ladies Stew Veterans

The Chinese 1-2 combination of Xie Jun and Zhu Chen led the way to another Ladies' victory over the Veterans in Round 4 by a 3.5-1.5 score. The Ladies now lead by a whopping 13-7 margin.

Korchnoi is the only Veteran who can claim to be performing well in this event so far, but even he had to kowtow to Zhu Chen of China. The Living Legend chose a quiet queenpawn setup: 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. e3 e6 5. b3 Ne4 6. Bd3 Bb4 7. Kf1. Zhu kept central pressure with knights on e4 and f6. After the knight were exchanged, both kings were vulnerable. Korchnoi threatened g7 with rook and knight, but amazingly, Zhu simply ignored it and continued building her own counterattack with Qh5. Her king was safe on h8, protected on the long diagonal by her bishop on e5. Korchnoi was forced to retreat his rook for defense; Zhu then doubled rooks on the f-file. It was all over in 34 moves as the Chinese dragon lady burned Korchnoi in impressive fashion.

Bouwmeester played the Exchange Slav against Galliamova, keeping his king in the center and stopping Galliamova's kingside pawn expansion with Rh4. The game was even until Bouwmeester took a pawn with his bishop, missing that his rook would be pinned to his king, losing material, so he resigned in 38 moves.

It was Taimanov's turn to play a sweet little melody on behalf of the Vets. The ancient Maestro played the double fianchetto opening. After a series of exchanges, he was left with 2 rooks and 6 pawns versus a rook, 2 knights and 5 pawns for Polgar. Taimanov expertly engineered a passed a-pawn, pushing it to a7 supported by his rook on h7. Polgar was down to a sole knight which wasn't enough to stave off defeat. A virtuoso endgame from Taimanov.

Round 3: Ladies Extend Lead to 9˝-5˝

The Ladies conquered the Veterans in Round 3 by a 3˝-1˝ score, extending their overall lead to 9˝-5˝.

Smyslov answered Xie's Ruy Lopez with an old favorite of his, 3...g6. After 40 moves of maneuvering, Xie was left with the bishop pair and 6 pawns; Smyslov had a bishop, knight and 5 pawns. That extra pawn was the difference as Xie's passed a-pawn sealed the win in 67 moves.

Polgar-Bouwmeester started as a Ruy Lopez Berlin. Sofia's inevitable kingside attack began with Nxh7 and eventually her queen came crashing down the h-file to win the game in 36 moves.

Ioseliani was confronted with Taimanov's Taimanov Sicilian. She quickly took command on the queenside with 2 advanced pawns and a rook, forcing Taimanov on the defensive. Down a piece and about to lose another, the Russian gave up in 38 moves.

Zhu-Hort developed into a long tough struggle, as Hort refused several opportunities to repeat moves. The endgame was a rook+knight+pawns with Hort up a pawn and forcing the action. But Zhu got the knights off and a draw was agreed in 60 moves.

Korchnoi saved the Veterans' honor with their only win of the day, besting Galliamova with a Caro-Kann. The Ancient Warrior's king walked out to f5 early, but Galliamova's monarch was unclothed as well, as the double-edged battle raged on. After the queens came off on move 40, Korchnoi was left with 6 pawns to Galliamova's knight and 2 soldiers. Both players queened a pawn after 56 moves, but Korchnoi managed to check and grab the knight leaving him up 2 passed pawns, and Galliamova resigned after 64 moves.

In Round 1, Xie Jun escaped disaster as Bouwmeester did not find the best continuation from a Guioco Piano and a draw soon resulted. Zhu-Taimanov was a Bogo-Indian where the Chinese lady attacked with passed d- and e-pawns supported by rooks on the first rank. Taimanov's passed a- and b-pawns were too little, too late. Zhu queened a pawn for the win. Polgar-Hort was a Sozin attack where black played passively and was overwhelmed by Polgar's kingside attack.

In Round 2, Korchnoi chose the Catalan against Polgar, and the Hungarian lady semed to do a favor for the old warrior of chess by an early dismissal of queens. Polgar sacrificed the exchange on c3 for a couple of passed pawns, but it was an ill-advised idea as Korchnoi mopped up a few moves later by winning a knight. Ioseliani saved the day for the Ladies by scoring their only point against Bouwmeester with the Dutch. Smyslov was up a pawn in the endgame against Zhu but couldn't find a win. Xie sacrificed the exchange against Taimanov for kingside pressure, but the Russian defended and Xie repeated moves.
