Game 5: October 15     Weekend!

Not a game for the history books. Most of the psychological advantage gained by yesterday's miracle escape was returned by Kasparov who burned yet another game with the white pieces. Doubtless, the strain was such that both were relieved to have at least a little rest on the weekend, but that doesn't usually satisfy the paying customers.

Both players looked a little groggy as they carefully picked their way through a position that does not appear to be in either one's regular repertoire. Kramnik in particular was moving slowly, and most commentators felt he was coming under steady and unpleasant pressure.

Could he complete his development? Neutralize the threats of invasion along the c-file? Apparently, as a sudden truce was agreed.

Hopefully this little lull will spell a return to full hostilities on Tuesday.

Kramnik leads 3-2.

White Gary Kasparov (2849) 1/2-1/2 Black Vladimir Kramnik (2770)

Current score: Kramnik 3 - Kasparov 2
