Polgar wins Japfa Classic
Judit Polgar scored one of her most impressive victories to date by taking clear
first in the "Japfa Classic" super-tournament, which ended on
Tuesday in Denpasar, Indonesia. The strongest female player in the history of
the game broke a four-way tie at the top by beating Brazilian GM Gilberto
Milos in the final round.
FIDE World Champion Alexander Khalifman came very close to sharing the
honours, but he was unable to transform his extra pawn into a win against former
World Champion Anatoly Karpov.

Super-tournament in Essen
Two strong GM-tournaments are currently underway in Essen, Germany. Group A sees
no less than seven super-grandmasters (+2600) competing in a ten man
field. Standings after round six:
Group A
1.Alexey Dreev (Russia) 4.0 2-4.Vadim Zvjaginsev (Russia), Rustem
Dautov (Germany) & Alexander Beliavsky (Slovenia) 3.5 5-6.Robert
Huebner (Germany) & Klaus Bischoff 3.0 7-9.Emil Sutovsky (Israel),
Curt Hansen (Denmark) & Vadim Milov (Switzerland) 2.5 10.Igor Glek (Russia)
2.0.
Group B
1-2.Karl-Heinz Podzielny (Germany) & Daniel Fridman (Latvia) 4.0 3-6.Georg
Seul (Germany), Karel Van der Weide (Holland), Vlastimil Hort (Germany) &
Oleg Romanishin (Ukraine) 3.5 7.Yannick Pelletier (Switzerland) 3.0 8.Fabian
Doettling (Germany) 2.5 9.Romuald Mainka (Germany) 2.0 10.Sebastian
Siebrecht (Germany) 0.5.
This year's Hastings Premier-winner, Emil Sutovsky, got off to a rough start
against Klaus Bischoff. I can't remember the last time I saw Israel's former
Junior World Champion get squashed like this.

46-year-old Alexander Beliavsky took an early lead by opening with 3 out
of 4. His round four win against Igor Glek was a true technical masterpiece.

In the next round, however, "Big Al" lost a strange game to former
World Championship candidate Robert Huebner, thus allowing Dreev to climb to the
top of the wall chart with a smooth win over Hansen.
At the start of this tournament my money was on Zvjaginsev - and it still is.
Any takers?

Dead Heat in Cannes
Who's the king of the Rivera? Last week's match in Cannes gave no answers as
France's new ace Vladislav Tkachiev and Holland's Jeroen Piket slugged it out to
a 4-4 draw. Tkachiev managed to pull away in game six, but the Flying
Dutchman equalised on the final day of combat.

Adams wins Redbus
Heavy favourite Michael Adams took care of business at this year's Redbus
KO-tournament in Southend. In the final match-up against Bogdan Lalic, Adams
was unable to make headway in the regulation games (two draws) and the 10-minute
tiebreakers (two draws), but Lalic finally cracked in the final 5-minute
blitz game:
A Kodak moment?

LALIC
Black is certainly better, but it's not clear that he's winning.
Forgetting to look twice, Lalic decided to head over to the kingside:
31.Ke2?? Nc3+ and White resigned.

The Danish Championships
The main story in this year's Danish Championship was veteran GM Bent Larsen's
sudden withdrawal and hospitalisation after losing his round one game
against IM Steffen Pedersen. The 64-year-old Dane had to undergo brain
surgery after suffering an edema (build-up of fluid in the cranium).
According to the latest reports, Larsen's condition is still critical.
Hands-on favourite Curt Hansen cruised to his umpteenth victory after
scoring four wins and four draws.
Final standings:
1.GM Curt Hansen 6.0 2.GM Peter Heine Nielsen 5.5 3-5.GM
Lars Schandorff, GM Lars Bo Hansen & GM Henrik Danielsen 4.5 6-7.IM
Erling Mortensen & IM Steffen Pedersen 3.5 8.IM Klaus Berg 2.5 9.IM
Jens Ove Fries-Nielsen 1.5.
