GM Einar Gausel annotates the Corus tournament

Van Wely (2700) - Morozevich (2745)
Wijk aan Zee (3), 2001

1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 dxc4 5.a4

5...c5!?
Morozevich is full of surprises.

6.d5
Natural alternatives were 6.e3 and 6.e4.

6...Bf5 7.e3 e6 8.Bxc4 exd5 9.Nxd5 Nc6
Black has previously tried 9...Be4.

10.Qb3 Qd7 11.Nxf6+ gxf6

Black's structure is not a pretty sight, but Morozevich usually puts more emphasis on dynamics than static considerations. It's worth noting how Black quickly manages to activate his heavy pieces along the d- and g-files.

12.Bd2 Rg8 13.Bc3
GM Shipov's recommendation, 13.0-0-0 , was probably preferable.

13...0-0-0!
13...Rxg2 14.Nh4 must be in White's favour.

14.Bxf7?
14.Nh4 looked much more sensible.

14...Rxg2

15.Nh4?
Van Wely obviously thought that this fork would bag him some free material. If the black rook retreats, then Nxf5 wins a piece in light of the threat Be6.

15...Ne5!
This must have some as a bit of a shock.

16.Nxf5
What else was there? 16.Nxg2 would be severely punished by 16...Nf3+ 17.Ke2 Bd3+! 18.Kxf3 (18.Kd1 Bc4+) 18...Qh3+ 19.Kf4 Bh6 mate.

16...Nd3+ 17.Kf1 Rxf2+ 18.Kg1 Kb8

19.Qe6
Or 19.Ng3 Qc6 20.e4 c4! 21.Qxc4 (21.Qb5 Qc5 22.Qxc5 Bxc5) 21...Bc5 22.b4 Nf4! 23.h3 (23.Qxc5 Nh3 mate) 23...Qxa4! 24.Qxc5 (24.Rxa4 Rd1+) 24...Rg2+ 25.Kf1 Qxa1+! 26.Be1 (26.Bxa1 Rd1 mate) 26...Rxg3 and Black wins.

19...Rxf5
Now, on top of everything else, Black is a pawn up!

20.h4
20.Qxd7 Rxd7 21.Be6 runs into 21...Rg7 mate.

20...Bd6 21.Rf1?
A blunder, but White was lost anyway.

21...Rg8+! resigns.

21...Rg8+ 22.Bxg8 Qg7 mate.

0-1
