GM Einar Gausel annotates the Corus tournament

Kasparov (2849) - Topalov (2718)
Wijk aan Zee (7), 2001

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Be3 e6 7.f3 b5 8.g4 h6 9.Qd2 Nbd7 10.0-0-0

10...Bb7
These two players have discussed this sharp line on several occasions...but usually with Kasparov sitting on the other side of the board!

11.h4 b4 12.Na4 Qa5 13.b3 Nc5 14.a3 Nxa4 15.axb4 Qc7 16.bxa4

16...d5
At this point, it looks as though Black's attack is faster, but White's seemingly weak queenside structure proves surprisingly hard to crack.

17.e5 Nd7
Anyone for 17...Qxe5 18.Bf4?

18.f4 Nb6 19.Rh3 Nc4 20.Qc3 Rc8 21.Bd2 Be7 22.Be1 Rb8

23.f5
At long last, White is ready to pursue his own attack.

23...Bc8 24.Bxc4 dxc4 25.Qf3 Bd7
White comes out on top after 25...Bxb4 26.Qc6+.

26.fxe6 fxe6 27.g5 hxg5
Trying to keep it closed with 27...h5 would be futile in view of the simple reply 28.Qe4.

28.hxg5 Rxh3 29.Qxh3

29...Qxe5
29...Bxg5+ 30.Kb1 Bh6 31.Nxe6 Qxe5 32.Nxg7+! Qxg7 33.Qh5+ Kd8 (33...Kf8 34.Rxd7 Qxd7 35.Qxh6+ Kg8 36.Bc3 Re8 37.Qxa6 and White should win.) 34.Bh4+ Kc8 35.Qc5+ Kb7 36.Rd6 and White's attack has reached overwhelming proportions.

30.Qh5+ Kf8 31.Nf3 Qe3+ 32.Kb2

32...Be8?
The situation remains unclear after 32...Bxa4 33.Bc3 (33.Qh8+ Kf7 34.Qxb8 Qxf3) 33...Rxb4+! 34.Bxb4 Bxb4 35.Qh8+ Kf7 36.g6+ Kf6 37.Qh4+ Kxg6 38.Rg1+ Kf7 39.Qxc4 Qb6.

33.Qh8+ Kf7 34.Bc3 resigns.
34...Rxb4+ 35.Bxb4 Bxb4 36.g6+ Ke7 (36...Kf6 37.Qxe8) 37.Qxg7+ and it's mate next move.

1-0
