Round 10: Anand Easily Wins Giants Title

Vishy Anand drew his final-round game with Vladimir Kramnik to win the Frankfurt Giants Rapid tournament by 1.5 points ahead of Garry Kasparov. Kramnik took third.

Kramnik-Anand began 1. Nf3 Nf6 2. c4 c6 3. d4 d5 4. e3 Bf5. After a series of exchanges, Kramnik was left with a 3-2 pawn advantage on the kingside, but a draw was agreed after 39 moves.

Morozevich continued with his tricky openings. His game with Kasparov started: 1. Nc3 c5 2. d4 cxd4 3. Qxd4 Nc6 4. Qh4. Kasparov went on the attack against white's king on b1. After the queens came off, Moro was left with 2 rooks and a pawn against Kasparov's rook, bishop, and 5 pawns. Morozevich stood no chance and resigned in 44 moves.

Shirov-Leko was a Ruy Lopez Classical: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Bc5. Shirov gave up his queen for a rook and 3 pawns, as well as doubled rooks on the open e-file. Both rooks made it to the seventh, and Leko gave it up in 41 moves.

Round 10 Results:

Kramnik ˝-˝ Anand
Morozevich 0-1 Kasparov
Shirov 1-0 Leko

Round 9: Anand Assured of Title

Vishy Anand defeated Alexei Shirov to assure himself of the Frankfurt Giants Rapid tournament title.

Anand responded to Shirov's French with the Steinitz line (4. e5 5. Nce2). Shirov left his kingside without adequate defenders and Anand was quick to rally his queen, rook, and knight around black's king. After 25. Rxg6+, the kingside pawns fell and Shirov tipped his king after only 28 moves, giving Anand the tournament duke.

Leko-Morozevich started 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nc6. They castled on opposite wings and Moro won the race, opening up white's kingside with his advancing g- and h-pawns. Leko resigned in 37 moves.

Kasparov-Kramnik was a Pelikan where Kasparov's challenger sacked a bishop on h3, shortly after refusing white's offer of a queen for a rook. Having nothing concrete, Kramnik repeated his queen attack on Kasparov's king for a perpetual.

Round 9 Results:

Anand 1-0 Shirov
Kasparov ˝-˝ Kramnik
Leko 0-1 Morozevich

Round 8: Kramnik Scores His First Win

Vladimir Kramnik scored his first win of the tournament by cutting down Alexander Morozevich, who has now lost 3 in a row. Morozevich-Kramnik started 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6. The position melted down to a queen-rook-and pawn endgame where Kramnik parried Moro's mate threat then turned the tables and ended the game a few moves later with an attack on Moro's pinned rook.

Leko-Anand went 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 g6. Anand worked on the a-file with his rooks while Leko took the f-file. They agreed to a draw after 34 moves.

Shirov-Kasparov was a Najdorf with 6. Be3. Shirov kept attacking Kasparov's a- and b-pawns with his queen, forcing a perpetual after only 19 moves.

Round 8 Results:

Leko ˝-˝ Anand
Shirov ˝-˝ Kasparov
Morozevich 0-1 Kramnik

Leko Upsets Kasparov, Anand Widens Lead

In Round 7 Saturday, Peter Leko upset pre-tournament favourite Garry Kasparov. The game was a Qb3 Grunfeld. Kasparov as white forced the queens off early, then worked on Leko's isolated c- and a-pawns. Leko defended, then initiated pawn exchanges on the f-file, forcing Kasparov's king up across the board to f4-g5-h6. Kasparov seemed to stumble with 39. Re2, but Leko returned the favor by taking a pawn on his 40th move instead of retreating his knight, so the position was even again. But after Kasparov's 46. Bd3, Leko was assured of winning at least the exchange, so Kasparov resigned after 47 moves. A fine day for Leko, defeating Kramnik and Kasparov in succession.

Anand trounced the fast-fading Morozevich from the white side of a Steinitz French: 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. e5. After Anand castled, Moro left his king in the center and thrust his kingside pawns forward, creating havoc near Anand's king. But the Indian speed demon shored up his leaking castle with his knights and rook while Morozevich strangely busied himself with maneuvering on the distant a-file. With 22. Qc2, Anand had already turned the tide, focusing on Moro's backward f-pawn. 24. e6, attacking black's queen while winning the f-pawn, forced Moro's immediate resignation. Anand takes a 1.5 point lead over Kasparov with 3 rounds remaining.

Kramnik-Shirov was a Meran drawn after 31 moves with equality of material.

Round 7 Results:

Kasparov 0-1 Leko
Anand 1-0 Morozevich
Kramnik ˝-˝ Shirov

Masters: Adams in the Lead

With 3 rounds left, Michael Adams enjoys a half-point lead over Vassily Ivanchuk in the Masters Rapid tournament. In Round 9, Adams won their individual encounter from the black side of a Scotch. He wound up 2 pawns to the good in the rook-and-pawn ending. In Round 10, Adams took the tournament lead by beating Rabiega from the white side of a Sicilian while Ivanchuk could only draw Van Wely. In Round 11, Adams settled for a 64-move draw with Rublevsky on the black side of another Scotch, while Ivanchuk drew Bareev in 24 moves.

Round 6: Shirov Wins Again, Leko Upsets Kramnik

After a slow start, Alexei Shirov made it two in a row with a 6th round win over Alexander Morozevich in the Giants Rapid Saturday. Shirov abandoned his French, with which he hasn't done so well in this tournament, in favor of the Sicilian Najdorf. Morozevich chose 6. Bg5 and 7. Qf3. They castled on opposite wings and Moro charged ahead with his kingside pawns, but Shirov nabbed them. Moro opened up the kingside with Bxg6, but the black king escaped to safety and Shirov's counter-threat against the white king was too strong, forcing Morozevich to resign in 36 moves.

Vladimir Kramnik again played his Sicilian Pelikan, eventually gaining a black pawn cluster at e4, e5, and f5, as well as pressure on the open g-file with his queen and knight. After the queens came off, a double rook-and-pawn endgame arose, but Kramnik was simply lost. The pawns were 3-2 on the kingside in Leko's favor and as Kramnik was about to lose another, he resigned in 46 moves.

Kasparov essayed his trademark Scheveningen Sicilian against Anand. The world number one sacked a piece for a perpetual attack on Anand's king. The monarch couldn't vacate the premises safely, so a draw was agreed after 30 moves. Anand maintains his half-point lead over Kasparov.

Round 6 Results:

Leko 1-0 Kramnik
Morozevich 0-1 Shirov
Anand ˝-˝ Kasparov

Shirov Finally Wins One, Anand Keeps Lead

Shirov posted his first win with a victory over Leko in Round 5. He stuck with his French Burn as black. Leko castled long, and Shirov sacked the exchange, then infiltrated white's king position with a pawn on c3 and bishop on d2. Shirov ended up with a queen and knight against 2 rooks, so Leko resigned, giving Shirov his first duke of the tournament. Shirov moves out of the basement which is now occupied by Leko.

Anand-Kramnik was a Sicilian Pelikan where the pieces flew off the board quickly and a draw soon agreed. Anand keeps his half-point lead over Kasparov. Kasparov-Morozevich began 1. d4 e6 2. c4 b6 3. a3 Bb7. After 38 moves there were only bishops and pawns remaining on the board so they called it a draw.

Round 5 Results:

Anand ˝-˝ Kramnik
Kasparov ˝-˝ Morozevich
Leko 0-1 Shirov

Shirov Dwells in the Cellar; Anand Leads

Alexei Shirov is struggling terribly and is in the basement with only a half-point after 4 rounds. After a Sicilian opening, the queens eventually came off and a bishop-and-pawn ending ensued, with Anand up a pawn. Anand picked off another soldier and, down 3 pawns to one, Shirov gave it up after 69 moves.

Morozevich unfurled his King's Gambit against Leko. The young Hungarian could make nothing of his passed h-pawn, so took a perpetual after 55 moves. Kramnik-Kasparov was an English opening where the pieces came off quickly. They were left with a rook and 3 pawns each, so a draw was agreed after 32 moves.

Round 4 Results:

Kramnik ˝-˝ Kasparov
Morozevich ˝-˝ Leko
Shirov 0-1 Anand

Kasparov Burns Shirov, Leko Loses to Anand

In Round 3, Shirov's French Burn was toast in no time as Kasparov sacked a piece for a pawn storm and queenplay against black's king. With 3 pawns for the piece, Kasparov rejected any idea of going for a perpetual and managed to get his rook to the 6th to aid his queen and pawns, forcing Shirov's resignation.

Anand-Leko was a Ruy Lopez Berlin. Leko had 2 pieces for a rook, but Anand's advancing d-pawn left him up the exchange. After 54 moves, Leko resigned when faced with the loss of his queen. Kramnik-Morozevich was a Chigorin defense. After 62 moves, the position was level and they called it a draw.

Round 3 Results:

Kasparov 1-0 Shirov
Anand 1-0 Leko
Kramnik ˝-˝ Morozevich
