Van Wely Wins Dutch Championship
Loek Van Wely is King of Holland. He drew his final-round game to win the tournament by a full point over Jeroen Piket.
Reinderman had rook-and-pawn versus rook, but couldn't win it, so he drew Van Wely. Van der Sterren upset Piket, dashing Jeroen's hopes of winning the title after a slow start. Van der Wiel's strategy was to confuse Fritz with an anti-opening-book opening: 1. d4 d5 2. c3 Nf6 3. Bg5 Ne4 4. Bf4 g5 5. Bc1. He collected the point after 46 moves. The entire nation of Holland probably breathes a sign of relief as Fritz did not manage to win the tournament.

Van der Sterren Forfeits to Fritz
Van der Sterren did not play his game against Fritz on Thursday, so the game ended after 1. d4. Van der Sterren is protesting the inclusion of the computer program in this Dutch Championship. It's a costly decision, as he was among the leaders with 6.0/9.
Van Wely remained the tournament leader by taming Bosboom in 40 moves. Bosboom tried something unusual in the opening. The game began 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 a6 3. Nc3 c5 4. dxc5 Qa5. Van Wely eventually took charge and wound up several pawns ahead. Piket kept pace by defeating Tiviakov and is a half-point behind Van Wely. Piket finally caught Tiviakov in a mating net and the game ended in 43 moves.
The final round is Friday. These are the pairings:

Fritz played the Caro-Kann and disposed of De Vreugt in only 31 moves. Van Wely remained the leader of the tournament by drawing Van der Wiel.
In other news, Tiviakov is protesting his drawn game with Fritz and wants the score changed to a victory for himself. Fritz's operator offered Tiviakov a draw when Tiviakov had a winning position, upsetting him.

Van Wely Short-Circuits Fritz
Loek Van Wely provided a textbook example of how to beat a computer in the 7th round of the Dutch Championship Sunday. Playing the English Opening as white, Van Wely locked up the center then created a pawn storm on the kingside while Fritz's pieces marked time on the back ranks behind the pawns. After 25 moves Van Wely's threats were unstoppable and Fritz's overheated circuitry had had enough. Fritz drops to a tie for third behind Van Wely and Tiviakov.
Bosboom, facing Jeroen Piket, one of the pre-tournament favorites, tried a little monkey-business as he dusted off the rare Polish Opening, but he soon slipped on a banana peel as Piket proved why he is a chess gorilla.
Van den Doel scored his first point of the tournament at the expense of Van der Wiel.

Fritz Grinds Down Grooten
Grooten's opening strategy was tailored to his opponent, the computer program Fritz: 1. d4 c5 2. d5 e5 3. e4 d6, etc. The closed strategy seemed to work well until Grooten finally lost his way, tipping his king after 57 moves, giving Fritz the duke. Tiviakov tamed Reinderman's Pelikan Sicilian for a 33-move win, leaving him in a 3-way tie for first with Van Wely and Fritz.

De Vreugt Upsets Piket
Dennis De Vreugt upset Jeroen Piket in the 5th round of the Dutch Championship Friday. After a Ruy Lopez opening, De Vreugt, white, came out ahead after the middlegame tactics and Piket resigned after 38 moves. Fritz came within a whisker of losing to Nijboer. Just before the time control, Nijboer lost the exchange, bringing a once promising position back to equality and a draw was agreed. Van Wely took the outright lead in the tournament by defeating Van den Doel, the basement-dweller.

Reinderman Draws Fritz
In the 4th round of the Dutch Championship, Dimitri Reinderman drew Fritz after only 26 moves; apparently the position was such that the computer didn't mind ending the game at that point. Reinderman played the King's Indian Defense, which can often be effective against computers.
There is now a 4-way tie for first between Fritz, Van Wely, Reinderman, and Tiviakov.

Bosboom Resigns to Fritz after Only 4 Moves!
Manuel Bosboom resigned on the 4th move of his game with the computer program Fritz Monday at the 2000 Dutch Championship. The moves were:
Fritz-Bosboom
1. d4 c6
2. c4 d6
3. Nf3 Bg4
4. Nc3
1-0
By resigning so quickly, Bosboom is apparently making a statement against the participation of Fritz in the tournament. The question must now be asked whether this "Dutch Championship" is a legitimate competition or merely an exhibition designed to market the computer program to consumers. Early tournament leader Van der Sterren has already said he won't play Fritz.
An exciting round 2: no draws!
Round 2 results:
Fritz 1-0 Bosboom
Piket 1-0 van den Doel
Tiviakov 0-1 Van Wely
Van der Sterren 1-0 Nijboer
Reinderman 1-0 Van der Wiel

Piket Draws Fritz
Jeroen Piket held the computer program Fritz to a draw in the first round of the 2000 Dutch Championship which runs from May 7 to 19 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
Piket, one of the pre-tournament favorites, opened with 1. g3, no doubt in an attempt to mitigate Fritz's opening book. The position whittled down to a knight-and-pawn ending and a draw was reached after 49 moves.
In other action, Van Wely beat Grooten's Nimzo Indian in 52 moves. Tiviakov's Sicilian was too much for Nijboer, and van der Sterren used the Caro-Kann to easily defeat van den Doel.
Round 1 Results:
Piket ˝-˝ Fritz SSS*
Van Wely 1-0 Grooten
de Vreugt ˝-˝ Reinderman
Nijboer 0-1 Tiviakov
van der Wiel ˝-˝ Bosboom
van den Doel 0-1 van der Sterren
