Jovan Prokopljevic: Portrait of the artist
Jovan Prokopljevic was born in 1940. He lives and works in Zemun, Yugoslavia. He is one of the best known chess cartoonists in the world, and publishes his various works regurlarly. Prokopljevic is currently working full-time for Politika, the biggest newspaper in Yugoslavia. He is not only a chess cartoonist, but draws on every subject.
Jovan tells us about how his chess art career got started:
"My first chess exhibition was eleven years ago in memory of my father, who was a good chess player. I am an architect - doing cartoons has always been my hobby. In 1992 I started doing only cartoons and I was hired by Politika as a cartoonist."
According to Jovan, chess is like life: in both you need to have beauty and logic. Prokopljevic fully agrees with the old adage that chess is a synthesis of art, sport and science.
Prokopljevic finds it easy to get inspiration for his chess works in Yugoslavia:
"I find chess in every corner. I go to many tournaments with my exhibition and I visit chess clubs in Yugoslavia. And yes I am playing chess myself, too. My rating in America is 2134"
