A QUICK GUIDE to help you learn the mysteries of Poker, or to sound as if you have already mastered them. 
All-in: when a player bets all the money he has in front of him at table stakes
Ante: opening chips put up by players to make a pot
Back-to-back: in Hold 'em when a player is dealt a pair in the hole, e.g. (A-A) also known as aces wired.
Blind: the forced opening bets at Hold 'em, made by the player to the immediate left of the dealer (small blind) and the player to his left (big blind)
Button: the dealer position, signified by a plaque, placed in front of the player, also known as a buck ('the buck stops here')
Buy-in: the chips which players buy to take part in a poker tournament
Fold: to throw away your hand, by not calling a bet
Flop: the first three community cards dealt face up in common at Hold 'em or Omaha, and by extension, the fourth and fifth up-cards also
Flush: five cards of the same suit
Fold: to throw away or 'muck' a hand, by not calling a bet
Full house: three of a kind and a pair
High-low: a variation in which the highest hand and the lowest hand split the pot
Hold' em: (full name Texas Hold 'em): two cards in the hole followed by a betting round, followed by three cards dealt together face-up, known as 'the flop', in common to all the players; a fourth up-card, 'the turn', followed by a bet and a fifth upcard, 'the river', followed by a bet: (x x) bet; x x x (bet) x (bet) x (bet). A player may use any five cards from the seven.
High-low: a variation in which the highest hand and the lowest hand split the pot
Kill-pot: raising the stakes at limit poker in the next hand after a big win, or scoop at high-low.
Live blind : a voluntary extra blind, after the big blind, which gives the player the option to raise again when the betting gets back round to him.
Lowball: 5 or 7 card version of poker in which the lowest hand wins: best hand is either A-2-3-4-6 off-suit, sometimes known as London 'lowball', or A-2-3-4-5, 'the wheel', when a straight or flush can count for both low and high.
No-limit: a form of betting when players can bet any amount they choose, from the chips or money in front of them.
Omaha: similar structure to Hold 'em except that a player is dealt four cards in the hand, of which he must use two, together with any three of the flop: (x x x x) bet; x x x bet: x (bet) x (bet).
Quads: four of a kind
Rags: cards which do not help a hand
River: last card at Hold em, Omaha or Seven card stud
Seven card stud : two cards in the hole and one face up ( followed by an opening bet), three cards face up (with a betting round after each) and a final card in the hole (with a final bet). (x x) x bet; x (bet); x (bet); x (bet); (x) bet. The player uses any five cards.
Straight: five cards in sequence (e.g. 5-6-7-8-9)
Straight flush: five cards of the same suit in sequence, e.g. 7 -8 -9 -10 -J
Street : the betting interval in a hand, e.g. fifth card dealt at seven card stud is known as fifth street
Table stakes: the amount of money or chips a player puts on the table, which he may not add to, or reduce, during the hand.
Trips: three of a kind
Wire-up: trips in first three cards in seven card, e.g. (9-9) 9
