Predictably, as we near the end of
the Summer Term, turnout was low; players came from London,
Warwick, Leeds and, of course, York. Play was
at the York Bridge Club, which was delightfully air-conditioned!
The Saturday was spent playing pairs
competitions; first off was a 'random pairs' match, which
led to the inevitable chaos and misunderstandings. We then finished
the day with a more light-hearted Speedball match; three
minutes per hand, with the T.D. hard on the heels of any player
with the audacity to stop and think during play!
Congratulations to Bill and Sushi for collecting more penalty points
than the other five pairs put together!
On Sunday, we started with a teams
competition, won surprisingly by the home team, and followed
by a Swiss individuals Speedball match, including one particularly
interesting hand set by the director, and won by Steve Parker, captain
of the London team.
Many thanks to everyone who took
the time to come to the event, and particularly to Phil Godfrey
for directing the tournament.
