This new edition covers most of
the common conventions, and the authors have streamlined the text
to give clear explanations in as little as two pages.
The authors explain the logic behind
each convention, and that will help the aspiring player perhaps
more than a lot of detail. The quiz that follows enables
readers to check if they have grasped the use of the method explained.
I particularly liked the excellent
treatment of Stayman, which can be used with some weak hand
types, and agree with the authors that a 2NT response to
the 2
enquiry does not exist. The idea, purported by some, that it should
be used to show both majors is totally unsound, as the Stayman-enquirer
may be looking for the best two-level sign-off. Hands then follow
to prove the point.
