Harvey's Hands

System - Who Needs System ?
by Harvey Fox

You are playing in a morning duplicate, where the standard is not world class. Since it is so early, and you think partner comes from planet Earth you agree to play Precision. That us the extent of system discussion.

Half way through the session you pick up

A 3
A 10 9 8 5 4
6 4
J 5 3

You are not upset when partner opens 1 (16+ strong) so you respond 1 Natural and game forcing. You are a bit surprised when partner rebids 5!

Your problem is a) what is he doing and b) what do you do next?

You must assume that pard hasn't gone completely nuts and forgotten that 1 was strong. So, since 1 was forcing, partner had 2 available to show clubs, 3 to show a solid suit and 4 to show support and a singleton club, why did he choose 5?

You do know he plays Voidwood with some partners, a convention whereby a jump to the five level asks for Aces outside the suit bid, maybe that is what this bid is. That's sorted out a).

What to respond?, Are we playing keycard or ordinary responses here? Hang on it doesn't matter. 5 shows two keycards without the Q, and it show two aces. Even if partner is inviting a cue bid, 5 shows the A. Perfect, whatever partner means by 5, 5 is the answer. Partner, now bids 7, which ends the auction.

Dummy hits with:

K Q 10 8 4
K Q J 3
A K 8 7

He's got his bid. You've got yours, +2210. System - Who needs system!
