Classic Kantar
by Eddie Kantar
Master Point Press, Paperback, Can$14.95

If you read and enjoyed this author's previous light-hearted books (Bridge Humor and The Best of Kantar) then you will already know what a treat is in store. If you have not come across either of the other titles yet, then add them to your 'wants' list now.

Kantar starts off with some of the amusing incidents that have arisen from his life as a bridge teacher. Then he moves on to his adventures travelling around the world to play. Finally, he takes an irreverent look at some of the ways in which experts (including himself) get egg on their faces.

This is a good example:

7 3
A K Q 4
N
J 10 8 6 5
W
E
S
9 2

Defending against 1NT, West led K. East, fearing that declarer had Q x, played the Jack to stop his partner underleading the Ace if he had began with A K x x.
On seeing the Jack, West thought that his partner had started with J 10 x, so to avoid blocking the suit, he continued with the four.
Now it looked to East as though his partner had started with K Q 9 4 so, to avoid blocking the suit, he ducked to declarer's presumed bare Ace. South was allowed to win the second round of the suit with the nine. Only a pair of experts could play this way!

This book is suitable for players at all levels. Don't expect to be able to put it down, though - book a whole evening off so that you can read it from cover to cover. Highly recommended.
