Secrets Of Expert Defence Cover

David Bird and Tony Forrester have collaborated on two books for B.T. Batsford: The Secrets of Expert Card Play and, more recently, The Secrets of Expert Defence, and it is the latter that is featured here.

This is no 'dry' textbook. The hands mostly come from top-level competition, many of them being defended by Forrester himself.

The following hand, which emphasises the need to be alert at all times, comes from a chapter devoted to preserving communications:

Declarer won the Q with the A. He now needed to draw trumps without giving East the chance to send a club through. When West's Q appeared on the first round, declarer played low from the dummy. Tony asked himself why declarer had played in this fashion. Accordingly, he overtook with the king of trumps!

Since the defenders now needed three club tricks, he led the jack of clubs. This was covered by the king and ace, and three more rounds promoted East's ten of trumps for two down. Perhaps this is easy when you know there is a problem, but would you have got it right at the table?

In the companion volume, Secrets Of Expert Card Play (ISBN 0 7134 8281 8 144 pages £9.99), the authors try to explain how the world's leading experts extract the maximum from their cards. Again, most of the hands are taken from top-level competition, many featuring Forrester himself.

"An asset to any aspiring intermediate and senior player."
Tony Casey, The Irish News

"A truly practical guide for those who wish to advance from intermediate level."
