British Premier League Result

The Semi-Finals of the First Division of the Premier League were played at the weekend (Nov 13 & 14). Collings (John Collings, Martin Jones, Alan Mould, Gary Hyett, Paul Bowyer and Phil King), as the leading team after the double round robin had first choice of opponents, and selected the Liggins (Glyn Liggins, David Burn, Brian Callaghan & Joe Fawcett) for the 128 board match played over the two days. This turned out badly for the Collings team who lost by a total of 97 IMPs.

The other Semi-Final was between Wright (Lionel Wright, David Price, Gunnar Hallberg, Colin Simpson, Tom Townsend & Nick Sandqvist) and Rosen (Neil Rosen, Andrew McIntosh, Gus Calderwood, Dick Shek, Steve Lodge & Peter Crouch. Wright took the first set of 16 boards by 52 - 0, and the Rosen team never really recovered. The final result was a convincing win to Wright by 117 IMPs.

Wright and Liggins meet in a Final to be held at the beginning of March 2000.

Originally the Premier League winners were guaranteed selection for the 2000 World Teams Olympiad. This is now in doubt, since it is possible that the World Bridge Federation may grant devolution to England, Scotland and Wales, in which case there will not be a British Team. It is my understanding, however, that the English Selectors will take the results of the Premier League into account if they have to select an English team to compete in Maastricht.
