There was an amazing response to the now traditional Limerick contest,
in Maastricht. This was the winning entry:
There was a lady from Maastricht
Whose system was very gymnasticht
Her fit-showing jumps
Could give you goose bumps
And her Leaping Michaels? Fantasticht!

The VuGraph commentators have come in for plenty of stick from the
audience in Maastricht. Yesterday one of them set a precedent by becoming
the first one to be so bored by the sound of his own voice that he could
be heard snoring into his microphone!

Sabine Auken phoned home to tell her young son Jens Christian the
good news that she was still in the competition, but that Jens had been
eliminated, 'Daddy will have to practice more' was his immediate reply.

The observant could not help but notice that the eligible Justin
Hackett was playing on a team that included Germany's delightful Barbara
Stawowy in the Brighton Swiss Teams. Is an Anglo-German alliance about
to be formed?

One EBU member who was less than happy about the result of an appeal took
it upon himself to request a mass walk out by all the competitors.
The result: he was quietly removed from the Hotel and the event by the
congress manager Phil Lloyd. The betting is on a life ban!

In the latest issue of the International Bridge Press Association's
bulletin, Editor Patrick Jourdain lists 13 teams to note in the Open
Series. England, who could have fielded such stars as Forrester, Robson,
and the Hackett twins, are not amongst them.

cost of master points and entry fees in order to pay the levy that is
due to the World Bridge Federation?

The August issue of Bridge Plus contains a sensational interview with
John Dowling of Mercian Travel. Phrases such as 'we have found
the EBU so difficult to deal with' and 'we have tried working
with the EBU but it seems a one-sided conversation' carry a familiar
ring.

At the recent Bridge Festival in Deauville, representatives of
the English trainer Michael Stoute told us to keep an eye open for a horse
called Lord Intyre. Please send 10% of your winnings to me care

A series of unfortunate incidents prevented any senior EBU officials from
attending the closing stages of the European Youth Championships in
Antalya - doubly unfortunate as England may well play host to
the 2002 championships. Fortunately, many distinguished English
players and officials were in Turkey, so we can rest assured that at least
one of them will be consulted - or can we?
