Ratty on Bridge

The MSO WorldWide Bridge Gossip Column
By Mark Horton

14 September 2000
There was an amazing response to the now traditional Limerick contest, in Maastricht. This was the winning entry:

There was a lady from Maastricht
Whose system was very gymnasticht
Her fit-showing jumps
Could give you goose bumps
And her Leaping Michaels? Fantasticht!

7 September 2000
The VuGraph commentators have come in for plenty of stick from the audience in Maastricht. Yesterday one of them set a precedent by becoming the first one to be so bored by the sound of his own voice that he could be heard snoring into his microphone!

7 September 2000
Sabine Auken phoned home to tell her young son Jens Christian the good news that she was still in the competition, but that Jens had been eliminated, 'Daddy will have to practice more' was his immediate reply.

23 August 2000

23 August 2000
One EBU member who was less than happy about the result of an appeal took it upon himself to request a mass walk out by all the competitors. The result: he was quietly removed from the Hotel and the event by the congress manager Phil Lloyd. The betting is on a life ban!

8 August 2000

8 August 2000
Will the EBU increase the cost of master points and entry fees in order to pay the levy that is due to the World Bridge Federation?

7 August 2000
The August issue of Bridge Plus contains a sensational interview with John Dowling of Mercian Travel. Phrases such as 'we have found the EBU so difficult to deal with' and 'we have tried working with the EBU but it seems a one-sided conversation' carry a familiar ring.

7 August 2000
At the recent Bridge Festival in Deauville, representatives of the English trainer Michael Stoute told us to keep an eye open for a horse called Lord Intyre. Please send 10% of your winnings to me care of Anna Gudge!

7 August 2000
A series of unfortunate incidents prevented any senior EBU officials from attending the closing stages of the European Youth Championships in Antalya - doubly unfortunate as England may well play host to the 2002 championships. Fortunately, many distinguished English players and officials were in Turkey, so we can rest assured that at least one of them will be consulted - or can we?
