OKbridge, ACBL and the Fifth Chair Foundation jointly sponsor
a spring event targeted towards college age players, the annual
Junior Collegiate Team Championship.
This event is played online on OKbridge and the tentative dates
for next year are 21-22 April.

At the Annual General Meeting of the
EBU on 4th October, Peter Stocken was elected as a Vice
President of the English Bridge Union.
Last year, Peter was presented with an EBU Gold Award in appreciation
of his outstanding contribution to bridge during his five year office
as Chairman of the Union.

WBF Women’s Committee Anna Maria Torlontano, Member of
the WBF Executive, has been appointed as Chairman of the WBF Women’s
Committee. She will be responsible for Women’s bridge in all 8

Our very own Editor Anna
Gudge, has been awarded the Bridge Personality of the Year
Award, by the IBPA, in Maastricht during the Olympiad. This award
is a great honour and richly deserved. Anna Gudge is a name familiar
to all bridge players through her indefatigable work for the World
Bridge Federation, The European Bridge League, as Secretary of the
former British Bridge League and organiser of the Simultaneous Pairs
for Bridge Great Britain. Anna says she is absolutely thrilled,
and hopes this award will assist her in her endeavours to promote
Bridge worldwide.

For the first time since devolution of the BBL the EBU has
held junior trials to aid the selection of teams for the Junior Channel
Trophy in December and the Junior Camrose and Peggy Bayer Trophies
in January, and also to lead to the formation of junior squads which
will take forward the training of the best English juniors towards
the target of the next European Youth Championships in 2002. 18 pairs
competed in a single-section double round-robin, comprising both under-25
and under-20 pairs. Results

World
Bridge Production, the organizers of the invitational pairs event,
the Cavendish -the Wimbledon of bridge (taking place each May
in Las Vegas)- are co-sponsers of the 1st University Teams Olympiad.
There will
be a special prize awarded to the team advancing the largest
number of places between the half-way stage of the tournament and
the end (in the event of a draw the number of VPs will decide the
winner). The prize will consist of "Cavendish-E-bridge cups", plus
free participation in 2001 Cavendish Team event for the team receiving
this award.
Bobby Hamman
will award the prize on the behalf of the Cavendish.

John Solodar is ACBL's newest Grand Life Master. The title
is earned by those members who have at least one NABC win and more
than 10,000 masterpoints. Solodar, a Bermuda Bowl champion (1981)
and winner in the Life Master Men's Pairs (1968), surpassed the 10,000-masterpoint
milestone here in Anaheim to earn the Grand LM title. Solodar also
has a third-place finish in the Rosenblum Knockout Teams in 1990.

Seven all-time greats were inducted into the ACBL Hall of Fame
at the annual Hall of Fame banquet. Joining the 48 stars already in
the Hall were George Rosenkranz, Sidney Lazard and Ira Rubin, who
were on hand for the ceremony, and deceased members Lou Bluhm, Harry
Fishbein, Charles Solomon and Meyer Schleifer. Once again David Ezekiel
of Bermuda was out-standing as the master of ceremonies. He introduced
each presenter who in turn introduced the new Hall member.

Around 70 teachers gathered to
enjoy the biennial EBUTA Jamboree held over 28 - 30 July 2000
at Loughborough University. A stimulating weekend led by EBU Education
Managers Chris Duckworth and Sandra Landy where all were helped to
improve their skills. Both bridge teachers and players, were inspired
by the teaching of star guests Andrew Robson and Andrew Kambites.
Everybody enjoyed meeting and sharing ideas with many other bridge
teachers from all over the country. In addition to the tuition, the
weekend included an Individual
Championship for the Philbrick Salver and a Pairs Competition.
Prizes for these, and for other teaching achievements during the weekend,
were presented by Andrew Robson and EBU Chairman David Harris.

Maastricht, 26 August - 9 September 2000. The countries participating
in the Open, Womens, Senior and Junior teams has now been

The 17th European Youth Bridge
Team Championships were held in Antalya, Turkey, from the
6-16 July, with 25 teams contesting the Junior (U25) event, and
12 the Schools (U20) section. Leading the field in the Junior
event, and qualifying for the 2001 World Junior Bridge Championships
in South America, were Norway, Netherlands, Israel
and France. The Home Unions, competing for the first
time as separate National Bridge Organisations following devolution
of the British Bridge League. England was the only Home Union
competing in the Schools section. For all the results see our

Contracts are about to be signed for the 2001 Generali European
Bridge Championships.They will be held in Tenerife, June
2001.These Championships comprise of The Generali European Women's
Pairs Championship, the Generali European Open and Women's
Teams Championships and the Generali Seniors' Teams.
