Venice
Cup - Rematch
The Netherlands vs U.S.A.
Remember the nail-biting
Venice Cup final in Bermuda where the Dutch team won the gold medal
by defeating the United States by the incredibly small margin of
half an IMP? Well, believe it or not, there's going to be a
rematch.
Tony
was an excellent teammate and captain.
There will be a bridge tournament
in memory of X-president of ROC Bridge Association, Tony Chang.
March 24-26, Tainan.
He led the Tai-Chi team and won numerours victory in international
contests. Tony passed by last year and playing bridge is no doubt
the best way to recall his image.
Venice Cup
- Rematch - The Netherlands
vs U.S.A.
A Dutch sponsor, at present anonymous,
has invited the American squad to go to The Hague and play
a return match against the Dutch champions. Jill Meyers of the American
team received official notification of the invitation only two days
ago. No one can recall when a winner of a world championship event
ever has issued a challenge to a rematch to the silver medal winner.
But of course no world championship ever has been decided by so
small a margin.
The unusual margin in Bermuda was
the result of a slow-play penalty against both teams, with the Americans
being charged with the greater penalty. Despite the unusual conditions
surrounding the defeat, the Americans reacted with such grace that
the Dutch press was unanimous in praising the demeanor of the American
team.
The invitation to the Americans
indicates that the Dutch sponsor will cover the hotel and meal expenses.
In addition the winning team will be awarded a $12,000 prize,
and the losing team will get $8,000. Plans are being made
to televise the match on the Internet.
The American team consists
of Meyers, Randi Montin, Tobi Sokolow, Janice Seamon-Molson, Shawn
Quinn and Renee Mancuso, plus Jo Morse, the non-playing captain.
The gold medal winners from
the Netherlands are Jet Pasman, Anneke Simons, Marijke van
der Pas, Wietske van Zwol, Martine Verbeek and Bep Vriend, with
Ed Franken as non-playing captain and Chris Niemeijer as coach.
