Botswana Babes ! [we have just received this Press Release, and are delighted to hear of youngsters in South Africa doing so well ... more information about the event can be found on the South African Site - Ed.]

The Botswana Bridge Federation selected a squad of eleven girls to participate in the South African Women's Bridge Association tournament.

They participated only in the Pairs event from 8th to 10th March. The girls came from three secondary schools in Botswana. Their ages ranged from 15 to 18 years. This was their first exposure to a tournament of this level - they have participated in inter - school tournaments sponsored by various organisations in the country, such as Barclays Bank, Coca Cola, Standard Bank and Orthosurge Surgical Equipment.

The objective was for them to gain experience and exposure. Junior bridge in Botswana is developing at a fast rate. Started by expatriate bridge playing teachers posted to rural secondary schools, it is now being continued by local teachers who were taught as boys and girls by these expatriate teachers. It is all done as an extra-curricular activity.

Presently bridge is played in fifteen secondary schools all aver the country. The game is sponsored together with other sports by the Government through the Botswana National Sports Council which funds participation by the students in tournaments inside and outside the country. The girls greatly enjoyed the experience.

More information can be found on the from the South African Bridge Federation site

Wales is on track to win the Camrose Trophy for the first time in its 42 year history. Yesterday's matches saw Wales beating the Republic of Ireland 16 - 14 in the first match, and the second match was a draw (15-15). Wales can afford to lose the third set by up to about 40 IMPs and still win the Trophy. Watch this space ! Current leader board. 12/03/00

A four man team, (Glyn Liggins, Joe Fawcett, David Burn & Brian Callaghan, captained by Glyn Liggins), has won the British Bridge League Premier League. Sadly, the British Bridge League no longer exists, so despite qualifying to play for Great Britain, they will, in fact, represent England in the forthcoming World Teams Olympiad to be held in Maastricht, The Netherlands, from 26 August - 09 September 2000. See our Results Section for more information, and read David Burn's article about the biggest swing in the match in our Articles Section. As always, look for the gossip in our Ratty on Bridge Series in the Articles Section ! 29/02/00
